I find the first one slightly strange but not offensive since im unaware of the context and it is not being used to joke about oppression.

So you have contradicted yourself...seeing as:
for personal reasons I think that its a bit distasteful to have them on public display in signatures..

    and
if you take your head out of your ass for a minute you will realise that no matter what other contexts it has, the Swastika's is and always will be, the symbol of Nazism

    and
I find a swastika to be racist, offensive etc. to me a swastika is the black rotated X on a white circle within a red background.

So now you are saying that its only the context of the post. Originally you said it was the swastika being displayed.

Either way along yourmuddled little argument where you second guessed and contradicted yourself, you made biggoted commenst about another religion.

So maybe if you swallowed your pride, apologised for your faux pas and sembled a decent and consistant argument someone might listen to you.

i wouldnt say ignorance... i think you'd find that most people would not know of its origins to budhism etc... WW2 is a lot closer in peoples memories... that design symbolizes a very different sentiment to people from the west than the people of budhism etc..

I love this selective editing. Cheers Syke. Ill be interested to see some feedback from the Admins though.

Erm...okay...so I sort of understand why the Irish Pride sig is gone, but the puppies? Has that been taken or is it counter-propaganda?

Ohn ow, because a few thousand people are offended (or maybe 10 as far as I can tell) by a jpg on a BBS system thast just apisstake tobegin with.

no.. somebody not knowing its origin is not ignorance...

its ignorance if they refuse to learn about it, and understand what its true meaning is.. but when some genuinely doesn't know about budhism or any of these types of religion's symbols it is not ignorance.. the majority of people in ireland were raised as roman catholics.. its not part of their religion to learn things like this...

I didnt offend anyone Syke. Show me my offensive comment and tell me how it could be construed as offensive

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,514 ✭✭✭Sleipnir

It used to mean Life, Love, Luck and some other 'L' word as far as I recall but what the symbol stood for changed 60 years ago to stand for something quite different.
The boy scouts used to use it but would they now?

You can whine "but it's a buddist symbol" but it just isn't anymore.

i dont mind the sig really, is it possible you could host it off site, ie not members.boards.ie, that way i can disable it using mozilla firefox and not ban all members images

    Thanks

AFAIK, several US infantry companies had swastikas in their insignias....

no.. somebody not knowing its origin is not ignorance...

Perhaps you should look up the meaning of the word.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,810 ✭✭✭DRakE

ferdi, if you're so against swastikas.. why would you use one in your sig?

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,548 ✭✭✭Draupnir

i dont see how my arguments are muddled, i dont have an argument as such, i just dont want to see swastika's in this context thanks. I add the context part to appease the Buddhist in syke.

if its bothering you that much, but you still want to see other peoples sigs, put the offending users on your ignore list

Here is a list of demands for banning due to the potential for causing offence:

-I find the union jack offensive after 800 years of occupation, ban it.

-I find all Fianna Fail material offensive as I had a grandfather fight for the free state army against those republican terrorists in the 1920s.

-My other grandfather was English, a nation which suffered from Irish terrorism over recent decades and so I would like the Irish flag banned please.

-For all our Palestinian members I would like the Israeli flag banned as it would be seen as offensive, similarly for Iraqis, Koreans, Vietnamians (sp?), Cambodians, Granadians (sp?), Chilians, Mexicans, Cubans, Panamans, Guamis, Afganis etc with the American flag

-For our free presbyterian members I would appreciate it if Hobarts sig is banned every Sunday, gambling tips on Sundays are offensive to them y'know!

-We must show some consideration for Islamic Fundamentalists also so all sigs referring to music, alcohol, films or fun should be stopped.

-Lets not forget Nazis, they have feelings too, ban all mention of socialism, communism and the hammer and sickle.

Won't somebody please think of the children?
