I had OS 7 I think running never got around to trying 8.

Virtual PC 2004 & Virtual Server 2005 won't support Mac OS due to the Apple processor architecture being different from Intel/x86.

I've never heard of a PC being able to host Mac OS.

It works fine the other way round (due to the x86 support apple has in it's processors).

I'd be interested in seeing a Mac OS emulator to play with OS X.

You can install Darwin on a PC, but it's fairly hit and miss. But it's not an emulator - it's an OS. It should run in VirtualPC 2004 as well BTW.

ive managed to get OS 8.0 running with basilisk. I think OS 8.1 is possible.

Anything later than that wont happen as they all MUST run an a PPC chip, and emulation for that seemingly is very difficult with software.

The other option would be to use a plug in CPU, but the plans to release this have been put on hold following a hreat of legal action from apple.

i was reading about basilisk and it says you need a mac for the rom do you need to extract the os rom from there or can max os be installed from a cd

The rom is available but if you haven't got a mac it's illegal, you could always try google for

"Apple Mac 128kB ROM image"
"Apple Mac 1MB ROM image"

I think the first one runs in basilisk.

I was playing around with Basilisk and OS 7/8 a year or so ago, and I remember reading that no emulator will ever be able to run OS 9 or OS X because it's physically impossible on the current PC architecture. I can't remember why, but if you scout round those web sites, you should find out.
