Radio 1 or Newstalk 106?

Just a quick poll for all of us Dubs (or anyone else if you listen over the net). There are probably more stations that are 24 chat but I don't know of any other. I personally prefer newstalk mainly for the sports show from 7-10 weekdays. I'm also a regular listener to Joe Duffy but newstalk would be my favourite overall.

BBC Radio 5 Live on crackly MW or NTL through my stereo is my first preference for news/sport.

to be fair to Radio 1, I havent listened to it that much, however, I vote newstalk as it seems much more accessable. Radio 1 often bores the hell out of me, while newstalk generally covers topics of some interest to me... also, while making the news more accessable and listenable, they dont seem to dumb down or 'tabloidise' anything.

    And you cant beat Hookey!!

Newstalk has settled down nicely now I think. Early on they had some woeful, and I mean WOEFUL newsreaders who just put me off listening.

Saturday and Sunday morning 'The Wide Angle' is good. I mentioned in a different thread that the 'Dublin Life' afternoon show is also excellent.

Radio 1 generally is non stop phone in moan shows. Just not my cup of tea at tall.

I basically listen to newstalk repeats at night as I don't get chance during the day.

Newstalk all the way. Maybe it's the focus on Dublin, maybe it's George Hook, either way they win hands down :)

The Last Word on TodayFM. The odd time tune into Duffy, and I'm not in Dublin, so no Newstalk.

I pity poor old Matt Cooper. It was a poisoned chalice he was handed. How does anyone follow the unique style of Eamonn Dunphy.

It is a pity Newtalk is not available nationally. I listen to it sometimes on the net.

I think Irish radio stations should be more available on SKY or on MW over the radio.

Have to agree, I've even bugun to get interested in Rugger with Hook and Popie !

Great footbal coverage and always seem to have great pundits with opinions - and Giles rocks !!!

Having access to the likes of the head geezer over the traffic division of DubCorp and Dublin Bus beats anything I've ever heard on Radio 1 to be honest - plus I've won a few prizes from them :D

It depends were you reside I suppose.

    Newstalk --> Dubliner
Radio 1 ---> Not a Dub or Identifies more with the Bog

I know some of his opinions can be hard to take but he does have a great understanding of the beautiful game plus the experience to back it up, I prefer him on radio rather than telly tbh - he has the face for radio don't ya think ?:D

I listen to Newstalk a good bit, George Hook is excellent, David McWilliams is good (though sometimes I feel he tries too hard to appeal to a broad audience), the sports show excels at what it does, and Dublin Life has made interesting listening any time I tune in.

RTE news can be a little bit serious, and their phone in shows a little moany.

FiveLive for me is the best overall. I try to listen in via satellite at night, or via MW in the car. Their football coverage is clearly best overall (though fair dues to TodayFM, their premiership show rivals them in the time slot), I love '606', and the late night radio is always entertaining and informative.

Another alternative on satellite is 'LBC' - "Londons Newstalk". Although it can be sometimes 'local in focus', it is generally well presented and rounded. The call-in debates on Clive Bulls show (10pm on) can get quite lively.

I voted Newstalk, but would've gone for FiveLive if it was available.

Incidentally, I switch between Cooper and Hook in the evenings, and the Last Word is still an excellent show imho, certainly for a commercial station with limited resources it gives Radio 1 a good run for their money. And, it has to be said, that George Hooks show is very much modelled on The Last Word.

Yes that's the only thing I find a bit irritating about McWilliams - he tends to go on a bit about soccer. Otherwise he is the best broadcast journalist on Radio & TV (Agenda on TV3 - excellent)

I was thinking more of his use of the vernacular all the time - 'my gaff', 'start a scrap', 'trouserin' the sponds', etc. Don't get me wrong, all that stuff is fine, but it doesn't really suit him, I think. Perhaps it is because I know him from Agenda and The Sunday Business Post (where his style is considerably more intellectual) that I find it so put-on.

When I heard he got the breakfast show, I thought - now there is someone who could rival David Hanly and co. Instead, the strategy behind the show seems to be to take listeners from the music stations with a snappy agenda of serious and not-so-serious short interviews.

I should have typed "and he tends to go on a bit about soccer"

But yes he does have that annoying ging-er tw*t side to him :D

I would tend to be more aware of his work in the SB Post and Agenda and he's, if not the best, one of the best. I might listen to Newstalk 106 for at most half an hour in the morning for national news. For international news I go to BBC Radio 4 and/or World Service
