Was out sailing (Sigma class) for the 1st time on Saturday. Heading out again this week, will see how it goes. Does seem to attract a certain class, it seems worse than down the rugby club. Maybe that was just due to the snobby bastids in the National afterward :)

If anyone thinks sailing is for poncies, rich boys, blah blah blah....they have a very narrow mind...

I'm certainly not any of above....
I was introduced to sailing about 2 years ago by a friend who has a lovely little 22foot sail boat (its a yacht, but if I call it yacht, narrowminds will jump on me, but its a fact, its IS by class a yacht).
My girlfriend and I shortly afterwards bought a similar boat and have been sailing as much as we can ever since... We love it..

At the start it quiet nerve racking when you dont have a clue what your doing, etc but after a while its pure fun and relaxation and challenging...People who sail dont have an easy life when the weather gets rough....I admit them when I realise what you have to put up with...you cant just give up and get off if yer stuck out somewhere!

We dont go far in our tub, went to Kinsale(boat kept in Cork harbour) a few times, planning to go west in August as far as Glengarriff hopefully.

What I am trying to make people picture is that, as with ANY walk of life or sport / pastime, you will get those sort of people who give the sport a bad name. But its only a section of the people. In sailing, you also have the sort of people who barely have the funds to keep their boat going, but wont give it up because they love it too much....
We cruise, racers are indeed a different breed of animal (sic. Paudie)

Yes but at the same time a 22 foot yacht aint cheap, so its going to be aposh sport no matter what, and most young sailors are going to be funded by daddy.

You can get a 22ft yacht for under 5000 euro :p
Most people that sail, either own their own dinghies (again costing well under 5000) or sail on other peoples yachts.
Most sailors do not sail from the RIYC or the RCYC and are very ordinary people.

"Sailing is a good way to get fresh air"
A walk in the park is a good way to get fresh air - There is a lot more to sailing

    people,

let's grow up, cop on and get out there ! you are surrounded by ireland's largest free park and there's always wind.

is it "posh" ? some harmless traditional aspects of some clubs may be "posh" whatever that really is BUT visit www.sailing.ie to see all the options on courses , clubs and classes.

is it expensive ? how much money have you wasted unnecessarily upgrading cars, lining the pockets of car salesmen. a boat delivers more fun, variation and now nearly more speed.

is it hard? yes can be. like a lot sports take lessons, join a team (crew), commit to it and gain a sport, skills and friends for life

    ignore nae-saying, be-grudging pre-conceptions.

get out there and try it..

with spinnaker on this one. Yes there are some rich w@nkers. But there are also alot of very sound people from all backgrounds. Who are out there every tue, thurs, sat and sunday for the love of the sport and nothing else.

Anyone I've brought out on the boat I crew on when we're short crew (I could never afford to buy my own boat for the foreseeable future) loved it and wants to come back for more.

Get on the boat and have fun, leave ur troubles ashore (along with any chips on shoulder)!

To OP: See ya in Cork Week!

I was brought up around the water & love it. Been boating since the age of 6, currently the proud owner of a LEncraft 5.5m with a 75HP Yamaha 2 Stroke... Not too big and not to small, well able for inshore cruising and pulls nicely on a single axle trailer :)
