I don't mind the ads at all and I'm a subscriber. They help Boards.ie so they're fine by me. One small thing though: once the ad is clicked it loads the new site in the same window. Is it possible to get them to open in a new window?

Dont sweat it Irishgeo... wounded animals are the most dangerous 'n'all and with this leg I'm well cranky these days... dont mind me. Anyway, I'm in a good mood after hearing so many people offered to help JH with the redesign etc... (see announcement).

No, you don't, don't try to "read between the lines" there.

I was amused to see adds for kazaa etc (apps which people are not allowed posts links to). I think it was in broadband.

I'm using firefox and the ads don't work for me. I try to click them and nothing happens. The only part of the ad that works is "Ads by Google".

They work fine for me, I'm using Firefox. Middle clicking them opens them in a new tab, which may help the people who posted earlier about opening in the same window.

We're under the Gag-Order (like everyone else) that he refers to there but for a hobby site they can definitely pay for the hosting... if we didnt have a deal with H365 they would be paying for ours alright! They arent much more then a decent Thai dinner out a month I can tell you. More then anything they are just convenient and also I think they are better for you guys as they are more relelvant. *shrug*

Settnig adverts as popups will fall foul of those of us with popup blockers (and anyone who installs XPSP2 and turns on the feature).

I've actually clicked on a few of the adverts I'm interested in (never thought I'd see the day) but setting adverts as a popup will dump that.

Anyone not under a gag order know what kind of page impressions are needed to qualify for google's ads? :p

Google are more concerned with the quality of the site rather than raw page impressions - they won't accept the usual dodgy stuff (porn, warez etc) and are also averse to sites with stuff like broken internal links. Basically as long as your association with them won't negatively impact the Google brand you'll probably be fine.

In fact, it's probably better for them if you don't have serious page impression levels... Google only pay out after you generate over $100 worth of clicks, or failing that, at the end of the calendar year.

So if you don't make it to the $100 trigger, the money paid by the advertisers sits in their bank account until the end of the year. Nice.
