Ok, I have a server running Windows Server 2000.
I had a big Western Digital 200Gb USB disk connected
and working ok. Today added a Maxtor 200Gb USB
disk to it, and installed the drivers from the CD (power
management and stuff). Rebooted as asked and all
seemed ok, except that I cant see the original USB
    disk.

Went to Device Manager and it says that "The drivers for this device are not installed". So go for the reinstall driver, and it finds the generic USB INF file in c:\winnt\inf\usb.inf. Try to install that but it gives the error "the installation failed because a function driver was not specified for this device instance".

So I uninstalled the Maxtor applications and rebooted again, but I've still got the same problem. Turned the
Maxtor disk off and rebooted and still the same problem.

I've tried windowsupdate but it doesnt seem to have
anything to help. As I remember there was no driver installation for the original USB disk, it was just recognised, so has anyone any idea as to how I'm going to get the server to see it????

Turn off the computer Plug the usb disk out and turn the computer on.
Then after its booted plug in your usb disk and see if it picks it up.

    Right CLlck My Computer
    Select Manage
In the Computer Management MMC console, click Device Manager.
Click the View menu and select to Show Hidden Devices.

Plug in your USB drive, and scroll to the USB section, and look for an entry titled something like USB Mass Storage Device.
Rigth click this and select Uninstall for each mass storage device that you want to uninstall.

Remove the devices from the USB ports, and replug them in to reinitialise the USB bus. THey should be redetected and you can reinstall them automatically.

    HTH.

I did this and I get the same problem. I plug the
USB disk in and it recognises it as a USB device.
But it doesnt load any drivers for it, and when I
try to install them it gives the same "the installation failed because a function driver was not specified for
this device instance" error as before.

Now though neither USB disk can be seen.....
(is this negative or positive progress?? I'm not
    sure)

I think I'll look for some sort of USB drivers app
    on the Microsoft site...

I had a similar problem to you. very same symptoms.

I think it was caused by unplugging the drive without stopping the device.

I tried changeing the drive letter etc with Partition Magic.
In the end i used Maxtors Disk utility to try and fix it.
It saw that there was a problem and couldnt fix it and recomended a low level format.
I did this as a lst resort and the disk was fine after that.
I lost 40GB of stuff as a result though.

Now i always optimize for quick removal just in case.

Tried to get the second disk working again at least
by reinstalling the Maxtor software, but it doesnt
    work now either.

Going to work my way through this though to see
    if its any use
