I'm in the early stages of getting a Warhammer Table made for me.

I was wondering if anyone had ideas on the following:
    • What type of wood?
    • What material to use to cover the wood?
    • What size the table should be?

If you can answer any of these question, it would be very much appreciated.

Hmmm, depends on quite a few things. Storage is also a consideration.

Might be an idea to go with 2 4x4 sections that can be stuck side by side to create an 8x4. A light wood should suffice.

Material-wise, it's up to you. Are you going for WFB? or W40K? Or necromunda, etc, etc (hence also the comment on 2 4x4s). Personally I have a big-ass felt cover that's 12x8 (but in fairness the board I use is HUGE). Felt does costs pretty money though, so you might want to look at the GW rolls which also come in a variety of colours from green, desert, etc.

As I said - it depends on what you want to do. The great thing with the likes of felts or rolls is that you can throw them on or off depending, as opposed to some fixed material. Then maybe paint the underlying board surface grey for the likes of Necromunda or ash-waste environments?

This is not scripture, and the amount of both playing & storage space available to you will play an important factor, as will the cost of any felts/rolls.

To be honest, we have a double garage with a loft. Space in not a question. Basically, an 8*4 would do me at the moment because I don't have a big army. How much would the GW rolls of material be for a table that size do you know? It's for 40K

Dont quote me on this, but last I saw they were only 5-10 (sterling) for a roll, probably more, cant really remember.

I made myself an 8x4 table, more than big enough, but rather than making 2 seperate piece's we just stuck the two bits together and put hinge's on em. However we used rather heavy material and put in a lot of support, weighs a bloody ton, but it aint breaking any time soon :)

Thanks Pugsley. Since I haven't been around for a while, I thought it was worth asking about. Is it for sale on the GW website?

If you want to learn how to make terrain (boards included) go into Games Workshop Dublin and ask for Woody or Malcom. Both of them are making 36 tables plus scenary for each for a tournament they're putting on in 3 weeks. So nows the perfect time to learn loads for free using someone elses stuff so if you **** it up it's not coming out of your pocket!!!

    :-)

Speaking of which, anyone else going to be going along to that?

I'll be bringing my chaos mortals, looking to get in some early practice for the Storm of Chaos.

Here's a suggestion for your games table as well - it's one that I've used. Once you have your board and your covering, you need something to support it. try looking at either (a) a ccouple of drawer units or (b) a couple of small cupboards, and use them as 'legs' at either end of the table. This way you can store all of your rule books or scenery or whatever right underneath your table for easy access. :D

I like that suggestion, Ameirgin. I'll definitely keep that in mind when I sort out the table.:D :D:D:D:D

Hmmmm, I never considered wood when making mine. I used thick sheets of insulation stuff, gluing one ontop of the other to increase durability. Its really light and it hasnt failed my yet.
