    Network Infrastructure
I'm going to try and track down some GigE and 12-port 100Meg modules for the Marconi switches, and hopefully procure a 8-16port GigE switch.
With 64-bit GigE cards in both the main servers and GigE uplinks between the switches (the Allied Telesyn will have to do with 1-400Mbit) we shouldn't hit any bandwidth problems for a while.
Might look at putting a RAID 0 array of cheap IDE/SATA 80gig drives in the IBM for some extra storage as a stop-gap to The Beast.

I'm going to try and talk to JP this evening or tomorrow and order the parts for the DualXP server, pursuant to that I should have it built within a week of delivery, will be running Debian.

Anyone want to give a hand with some Logo work and/or a bit of web coding?

I'm going to hit a few places for some extra prize sponsorship aswell. Asok's giving a hand with that :)

    Hooking up to the network
Along with the website (see below), I've got an idea for making your lives easier.
    It goes roughly like this;
    a) ye register your desired hostname (ie your nick or a variation thereof) and your NIC's MAC address with me/on the website.
    b) I enter the MAC address into the config of a DHCP daemon running on Blackle/IBM box/whatever which gives your machine a pre-assigned and fixed IP based upon your MAC address and also fills in the Subnet, Gateway (if applicable) and DNS details for you.
    c) The pre-assigned IP addresses are bound to hostnames in a BIND daemon/DNS server.
    d) Now if you want to host a server, instead of people roaring across the room asking you what your IP is, you can just announce it over TeamSpeak/IRC/Intranet messagey thing that you're box is running one and people put your hostname into the connect field and hit go.
No more need to remember various people's IPs.
Also, you'll have the same IP and hostname for every LAN.
At least, that's how I hope it'll work.

    Possible problems:-
    1. More than ~240 people register MACs with GalwayLAN
Solution: Simply cull anyone who's nolonger attending (might have moved away etc.) or increase the subnet to add more address-space :)

    2. Your machine won't pickup a DHCP server/address
Solution: come up to me, I'll look up your details and you cna fill em in manually till we sort the problem

    3. You get a different NIC with a new MAC address
Solution: I edit a few characters in a config line and it works again, you'll still have the same IP and hostname

    Web Site
I plan on setting up a website or 2 in the near future, and am still milling a few ideas in my head as to what's actually needed and what design I'll be going for.
It'll be PHP and MySQL driven (probably going to be hosting it on my CompSoc webspace).
    Modular, elegant and fast-as-fuck.
Sections for Homepage/news, Gallery, History/About, Message Box, Contact Info, Member section*
Some sort of count-down timer thing till the next one.

    * This would be somewhere for ye to register, submit your desired hostnames, give me your MAC address, fill in details about yourself, post on the guestbook<?>, do some other stuff.

Anyone ahve any comments, suggestions, constructive criticism?

wont you have to link up everyones hostname to their respective ip for each separate lan though? (it wouldn't affect me of course, but that'd take you a while.....), unless there's some sort of permanent seating arrangement for galway people and then free seating for everyone else.

Good idea on the gigabit switches tho, that'd own.

The hostname is tied to the IP, the IP is tied to the MAC address of your card.
You could get a media converter and run fibre out to Bushypark and you'd still get the right settings on the LAN.
It also nicely allows for people with 802.11b/g cards to access too :)

I've ammended the server shopping list.
Will hopefully be ordering within the next 3-4 days.

Had a bit of a chat with a friend of mine (RoryD from CompSoc) about web design.
I've got a decent idea of the featureset I want, the inital site structure and the layout.

Will be using tables, PHP and MySQL.
News, Comments, Gallery, Links, some sort of user/member interface.

As for the Logo - I'm not particularly sure, something gothic, industrial or Organic - Giegeresque prehaps, I honestly don't know.
But something that incorporates gaming, galway, maybe networking and/or beer.
No characters, models or skins from any largely popular game please, that will date it too much too soon.
And above all, we have to be able to print it, a version of it or create a new one, on t-shirts.
