I'm finishing up where I work and gave back the Nokia Communicator 9200

(A brick that combines a computer and phone, fax, web, email etc).

I'd like to get a phone of my own now.

Should I go for a basic "talk box" or if wanted to be able to:
    * send faxes
    * do real email
    * Write articles (with real keyboard) to load to PC later
    * do SMS with real keyboard

Would I get a newer update of the Nokia Communicator or is there something more sensible.

I don't think the ngage is it, as it deosn't seem to have a keyboard. Nice display though.

I'm not interested in games on it or a camera.

(I have a real camera for photographs and could play games on my PC or laptop or even my ancient gameboy. If I wanted to. The kids have GBA, PS etc too. I did quite enjoy Discworld Noir last year, but seen nothing since I wanted to waste time on ).

The Nokia Communicator 9500 is due out soon. www.expansys.co.uk has details. Looks real nice, has wireless lan built in.

    Bound to be expensive though.

    XDA

    Hi Watty

    Palm make the
Treo 600 smartphone runs Palm OS 5.2.1H but it costs 800 euro with out a phone contract.

Also the Siemens SX1 costs 500 euro direct from siemens no contract but no Keyboard.

Nokia have the 6600 which is the same as the SX1 but cost 50 euro more.
    Also the Nokia 9210i Communicator.

Then you have the XDA type device made by HTC.

    Hope that helps.

There is some pretty sweet phone coming out during the summer. I hear the 6600 and 6320 should be out within 5 weeks or so, with the 7610 and a few other sweet little phones coming around July.

The WiFi built in is nice and the Nokia 9500 has a decent amount of RAM etc too.

I did use a palm but found the lack of built in phone and keyboard made it a bit useless for what I wanted (gave it to the kids with some downloaded Palm OS games).

The Treo 600 might be half the price though and does have keyboard.

Does O2 here in Ireland subsidise/supply it?

    On UK site
Handset Only Price: £481.95 (410.17 exc.)
    With O2 Connection: £246.95 (210.17 exc.)

What's the Treo like for reading a regular A4 page?

Can it send / receive fax?

    Hi Watty

I found a number of Palm O/S software programes to help you fax.
If you go to www.palmsource.com you will find them.
    I found one called
    InStep Fax for Palm OS.
    Simple Internet Fax 3.4
    by AdvMathAppl, Inc.

The Treo 600 is a nice phone and is quad band. But it is small.
You could also try the Palm Tungsten W a bit bigger but more PDA like but it's only €406.95 and is tri-band. The bigest draw back with the W is Palm OS 4.1.1 this is very old now as Palm OS 6 is due out soon.

As for o2 i don't think they sell any PDA/Phone unless it is the XDA.

The XDA the keyboard is an accessory.. so no go.

    Thanks eoin.

The standard included fax system on the Nokia Communicator worked very well, as did printing to IR port on my Canon BJC85 that I have for laptop. The serial cable to PC was OK, but IR to Nokia didn't work on XP till I got a freeware IR driver.

I never used the Nokia as a fax modem or GSM modem on the PC. I have no need for that.

I did write a program to use a ordinary nokia phone as a GSM SMS terminal server as a background "service". From any place on LAN you could send SMS via email client. Also validated incomming SMS could be automatically emailed.

Whats's the Noia with full keboard split either side of the screen? Does any phone company subsidise it?

    Is it obsolete now?

Does it only do SMS or can it send/receive fax?

Meteor do the Nokia 6820 on contract or prepaid. It has foldover keyboard and lots of goodies.

    actually,
I must say, for the budget price, and for a very basic fone, with no camera etc and a colour screen, its a very capable little phone. Also has a v nice clear screen.
I have yet to come across a sagem that I can find any huge fault with.
