Iarnród Eireann test new DART carriages
    26/04/2004 - 4:41:28 PM

Iarnród Eireann has begun testing a number of new DART carriages.

Sixteen carriages, of a consignment of 40, have been delivered two months ahead of schedule as part of an €80,000,000 investment.

Meanwhile, 67 new Intercity carriages have been ordered from Spain, at a cost of €117m. They are due to come on stream late next year.

Are these the same design as the current new carriages? I heard rumours of seatless carriages - was this some sort of falsehood?

I doubt it. Perhaps they have fewer seats (the typical DART has twice the seating of most similar trains), but I haven't heard of any modern seatless carriages, anywhere.

They have the same seating as the current Mitsui cars i.e. leave your legs outside if you're over 5' tall !
