No wonder English is so difficult to learn
    We polish the Polish furniture.
He could lead if he would get the lead out.
    A farm can produce produce.
The dump was so full it had to refuse refuse.
The soldier decided to desert in the desert.
The present is a good time to present the present.
At the Army base, a bass was painted on the head of a bass drum.
I did not object to the object.
The insurance for the invalid was invalid.

The bandage was wound around the wound.
There was a row among the oarsmen about how to row.
They were too close to the door to close it.
The buck does funny things when the does are present.
They sent a sewer down to stitch the tear in the sewer line.
To help with planting, the farmer taught his sow to sow.
The wind was too strong to wind the sail.
After a number of Novocain injections, my jaw got number.
I shed a tear when I saw the tear in my clothes.
I had to subject the subject to a series of tests.
How can I intimate this to my most intimate friend?
I spent last evening evening out a pile of dirt

If I'm not mistaken hiberno-english has more sounds than most other dialects so is even worse.

Love the way in England (esp. London) they can't pronounce f,s,h,r correctly
    F - f for sugar
    H - 'eh
    R - are

How many -ough sounds are there ??
    Through
    Thorough
    Slough
    Rough

So did you eject Prudence via the window ?
Threw Tru through , True !

This must be the maddest combination of letters in the english language

    Through (throo)
    Trough (troff)
    Though (tho)
    Tough (tuff)
    Slough (slowe)
    Tought (taut)

Just be glad you're not a TEFL teacher.

Sorry, had to be a pedant. :)

Slough => "Sloff", like trough, as in pig trough.

...unless it's an American pronunciation... some kind of river chanel, instead of "sloughing off skin" :dunno:

    Edit:
I have no idea why I posted this.. :dunno: must be the drugs...

If you are ever near 51.31N 0.36W I'd recomend you don't be too pedantic.

Yeah, fair enough :). I wasn't thinking of the place. I was thinking more of "shedding dead skin" type of thing. That's where my mind was then :) I knew I shouldn't have had that bottle of cough (coff or cow? ;)) syrup...

    :D
