it appears that the Japanese weren't too enamoured with the 3 taken hostage in Iraq. The article makes their treatment sound a bit nasty.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2004/04/22/international/asia/22CND-JAPAN.html?pagewanted=1&ei=5070&en=a6980f3e83f3bf87&ex=1083470400
"You got what you deserve!" one Japanese held up a hand-written sign at the airport where they landed. "You are Japan's shame," another wrote on the Web site of one of the hostages. They had "caused trouble" for everybody. The government, not to be outdone, announced it would bill them $6,000 for airfare.

    ouch!

Thats not exactly a nice way to deal with people who suffered so much and went abroad with a desire to help people. Mind you, the Japanese attitude is an extreme case of blame the victim for the crimes of the crinimal that we often see elsewhere. If they hadnt gone to Iraq, then the insurgents wouldnt have had to kidnap them after all. They bear the responsibility.

The Japanese are different....where we expect sympathy they punnish, we laugh at what causes them acute discomfort. So I guess that makes us different too!
