Where did this quote come from originally? I know it's used in a dialogue in the film Good Will Hunting, is that where it started? Had a quick look on the internet, no luck. Just wondering

You obviously didn't search that hard - here's a link, here's another, and here's yet another.
Anyway, the phrase has been around since the 1920s in the US and has appeared in other sources, such as the Paul Newman movie "From the Terrace". It's meaning is clear but there's no historical reason it seems for it being apples. There's also history apples being replaced with grapes. Popular theory seems to suggest it's because apples can be either sour/sweet and thus there's an element of not knowing what you're getting until you bite into it/understand the truth.
