You can get it over at Blackhole Motorsports. Its only got 2 cars and one track .. but the track is Spa so it should be a decent workout :)

Just installed it, will post my thoughts after I play around with it.

oh my fcuking god ! this is unreal good considering its just a press demo. the handling, the forcefeedback effects, the sound, omg the SOUND of the Lister blasting around Blanchimont in 6th, feathering the throttle and running out over the run off and diving on the brakes for the bus stop chicane.

The King is dead, long live the King.

OMG this is gonna be huge.
Im gonna download it overnight as im on ISDN.
I knew this was coming but not so soon.
Noel tell me more, tell me more :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,316 ✭✭✭ButcherOfNog

    the sound is awesome.
every bump in the track is modelled, its not a plain flat track anymore.
when u go off the racing line .. you lose a bit of grip.
you can adjust your seating position.
the car shudders/squirms under heavy braking, hard to explain, you need to experience it.
    the sound is awesome.
this isn't the full public demo, its just a press 'work in progress' demo.
did i mention that the sound is awesome?

off to try and not get carried away and miss the bus stop chicane and bin another perfectly good lap :)

a word of warning, the setup provided with the Lister is very understeery, if you know what you're doing with setups you can increase the rear anti roll bar stiffness and that should do the trick. Theres plenty of decent setups and hot laps available from this RSC thread

Im about to start another attempt to download this overnight, connection failed lastnight and i so looking forward to trying this beast out:(

Sweet mother of jesus,i knew this would be good knowing the guys from Simbins work but Jesus H Christ this is out of this world and ill tell you why.
I drover Formula Ford for 2 seasons in the past and had the pleasure of driving an RT 2000 car almost 2 years ago for an 8 lap outing.
I am a huge racing sim fan and have played them all.
Nascar 2003,GTR2002,GPL,PrototypC,GPL 65,LFS you name it ive played it and its mods to death.
Put simply one cannot tell anybody how good this really is and even come close to finding words to do GTR justice.
I knew this would be good but Bloody hell this is just the real thing,i kid you not it felt like i was sitting in the RT 2000 all over again but with more horse power.
Everything about the driving is scarily real, the way the car squirmes about as you are braking hard to the balancing of the trottle navigating corners is just like the real thing.
GTR_Press_Demo has gone way past my wildest dreams and expectations.
Im seriously shocked at how good this really is.
I cannot find the words to do it justice,i will atleast try to sum it up by just saying "REAL".
The King is dead, long live the King.

At first i thought no way Noel could possibly be over stating here but Jesus even saying that Nole is vastly under stating GTR.

Just wanted to add that you guys should head to Mondello Park to see the British GT racing this weekend,i was at practice today and the sights, sounds and speed were superb.

Hmmm. I've spent a couple of hours this morning playing with this demo. Unfortunately though, I've no wheel, so I was limited to using the keyboard or the joystick. I found both options made the game unplayable. Using the keys, the throttle is either full on or full off, which makes it impossible to drive off from a stationary position without spinning the wheels and crashing into the barrier. With the wheel spin limiter on, it helped a little.

Overall, it looks and sounds great, I just can't play it and it's driving me mad. Are you guys all using steering wheels, or am I just crap at driving?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,316 ✭✭✭ButcherOfNog

yup, for a sim like this one only a wheel (preferably force feedback) and pedals are necessary. Having said that, its an early demo of it, they'll prolly include proper keyboard support in at least the arcade mode :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,709 ✭✭✭Balfa

Downloading it now. getting excited. :D
    should be studying :P

Yeah, to enjoy any of the games dcully mentioned, you have to have a wheel (or at least a joystick, which is what i often use, cos it's such an arsbag to set up the wheel every time i want to play ;) )

Can anyone give me the names of any other sims I should own, or should check out. I know Gran Turismo and that ilk do not really fall under this, but is there anything even like that on PC. I play a fair bit of GP4, but that is about it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,709 ✭✭✭Balfa

    nyom!
very nice. i played a little bit, only with keyboard. it was obviously a bastrud to control ;) managed a 1:47.5 in the morgan :D mann, the morgan's engine is sweet, and the liveliness is awesome.

As for Gran Turismo on the PC, the closest you'll get probably are the Need For Speed and Test Drive series, and maybe toca race driver? dunno.
The best racing games for the PC are all the serious hardcore sims, like GPL and nascar.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 14,748 Mod ✭✭✭✭Dcully

Clostest thing to Gran Tirismo on PC is Live For Speed except it is 10 times better than GT.
Generally serious sim racers ahve the following sims.
    GPL
    Nascar 2002 + mods
    F1 2002 + mods
F1 Challenge + its many mods
    Live For Speed

I have over 20 Mods for the above ,all are really great, some spectacular, for example.
For F1 Challenge ,Prototyps C,ETCC,DTM are superb but theres many mnay more.
    F1 2002 has the amazing GTR 2002.
Nascar has TPTCC,Trams-am,Busch series 9all are fantastic]
For GPL there are mostly cars, tracks and sounds to get of rit but are of extremely high quality.
Alos the newly released GPL 65 mod is sensational and a lot easier than default GPL as the cars are less powerful.

The simracing modding scene is almost as big as the first person shooter modding scene.
I have over 20 mods to add to the above racing sims on my HD.
With regards a wheel,YES YES YES you simply need one preferably a force feedback wheel but my god it is worth the investment as these sims and their mods are really great stuff.

[understatement] Holy Moly that's good [/understatement]

On a somewhat related note, I see act-labs have decided to quit production of their Force RS wheel. I'm not that surprised considering, the cost of it tbh - I'm just glad I got my setup a couple of months ago.

for some reason the setup will not allow me to change the antiroll bar stiffness ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,709 ✭✭✭Balfa

I was wondering about the anti-roll bar, too, until i realised the morgan don't have one :) If you use the lister, i'm sure you'll be able to change, and boy-o, it sure makes a difference! The car cuts into the corners, now :)
It looks, because the anti-roll bar at the back is 0 by default, that the dev team set it up nice, then lowered that on purpose, knowing it would make the car understeer safely without any other effects, so that the press would be able to complete a lap in this demo :)
I think the morgan is even more understeery than the lister by default. Any suggestions how to fix that?

I've always wondered what exactly an anti-roll bar is.... :)

nog, I'm a setup n00b. throw yer setup up somewhere, so we can download it ;)

btw, i did of course mean 2:47.5 as my morgan time. it's now down to 2:28 though. And my lister time is 2:17. That seems too quick though, for a n00b like me :/ Especially since i was using keyboard (with antiwheelspin and antilockbrakes on low), and i got that time before i changed the anti-roll bar... I was comparing it to real GT qualifying times at spa, and it looks pretty rapid. Is something wrong? Were the last few years of spa races in the rain, or something?

Heres my setup at the moment, no driving aids on for me and my pb is a lowly 2:22, I keep mucking up the bus-stop, can't find a way thru it thats quick and spin almost every lap at it, getting the car settled after blasting thru the fast corners up to it is a nightmare. Need to put some more laps in and I'll probably soften the setup a bit as well, its too easy to lose it over the bumps. Fine for qualifying but in a race it'd be a nightmare.

btw, FIA GT cars have no driving aids, no F1 style Traction control or ABS or anything like that.

Do you guys actually used manual gearbox? I guess I'm not use to manually changing gears so it suck a bit :)

I know... i just didn't realise it would make such a big difference :) Maybe the driving aids are too good in the game?

neokenzo: I use manual gears and i'd imagine most others do here. It's not that big a deal. You'd get used to it in under ten laps, i'm sure, especially with these downforcey monsters that can brake on a sixpence :)

This sim is meant to be played without any aids except maybe auto clutch.
I use the default setups and all aids off except for auto clutch and find them very driveable.
Im down to 2.17.6 with the Lister.
Cannot wait till release to actually race AI and take it online.
Judging by Simbins GTR 2002 the AI will be excellent.
