EDGE technology

I read a few media reports that instead of buying a 3G license Meteor plan to introduce something called EDGE technology that is essentially an upgraded GPRS service that can provide similar services to 3G. Does anyone know anything about this?

    What can EDGE do?

Do handsets need to be EDGE enabled and if so have any been launched?

If services such as video calls are available with EDGE then are they compatible with video calls on 3G networks? etc...

some info in this thread re: Meteor and background on EDGE...

there are some handsets released here that include EDGE for data transfer - but no network to support them (here as yet) - mostly from Nokia, their Forum Nokia site lists all their device specs (e.g. 3200, 6220 and 6820)

cross network video calling on our shores - not any time soon...
