I was watching The Brasseye DVD a few days ago, hadn't watched it in a while. Its bloody hilarious, the Drugs one is possibly the best. I can't believe though they all for The Cake Drug it looked nothing more than cellotape painted yellow, I was LMAO at Jeffrey Boycot telling drug offenders to fully get out the bed. I know Tania Bryer isn't the sharpest tool in the box but surely she should have realised something was not quite right reading out "Ultra bollock carbons" in The Science one.

Morris: " People say alcohol is a drug, its not a drug its a drink"
Morris: "Where's your self re-cocking respect?"

    :D

I heard this release is very low quality though, with a terribly grainy transfer: can you confirm this?
Also isn't Season 2 meant to be released later this year?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,092 ✭✭✭✭Tusky

    Transformers season 1
    The office season 1
The League of gentlemen season 1
    Family guy 1-3

The dvds are standard quality, better than when broadcast and the vhs tapes, but not quite as good as the artisan dvd release of season one. If you aren't picky about perfe t quality, then the dvds are fine.

Season 2 is reported to be released in region 2 format in September/October/November but nothing is definite. They may not have been transferred to dvd yet.

Spaced season 2 has a cool extra, the homage-o-meter where it tells you where everything comes from. It is good fun, but would have been cooler on season 1.

It WAS cut from the DVDs. I, fortunately, have it by other means :) (altho' not on the DVD itself).
If you want to collect Stargate, and have a R1 capable player, DVDSoon are selling S1-S3 for €22 each. Otherwise play.com have them on half-price.

Alas though their free shipping is ending at the end of this year. After that youll have to pay. It's CA$5 for a single DVD and a bit cheaper if you buy a few at once (e.g. 5 is CA$17). I think the site will still work out a fair whack cheaper than its competitors anyway.

Didn't know about that. If that's the case you should make any preorders before they start charging for shipping as they bill you there and then.

I saw that Osama Bin Laden scene online... it's the 'Road To Rhode Island' episode where Stewie and Brian have their own episode - they have no get back to Quahog and keep having problems.... kinda like an animated 'Planes, Trains and Automobiles' :)

    Great episode!

Anyways, the banned scene is where Stewie is going through the airport security and they x-ray his bag so he starts singing a showtune to distratc them from what's in his bag on the screen. And he gets through and then Osama Bin Laden comes alone and starts singing his own showtune.

I'll see if i can find it and post it here if i do!

EDIT: Here it is - found it on Limewire - and upped it to my webspace.. Enjoy!

Cheers, Basquille - I downloaded the full episode of this from a source which said it *did* include this scene, but when I watched it afterwards, it didn't! Gah! Good to see it again - am I right in thinking this was screened on Sky One here? I do remember seeing it a few years ago, but can't remember if it was from Sky or another source.

  • Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 18,011 Mod ✭✭✭✭ixoy

Ya, it's a good scene. I'm lucky enough to have it integrated into the full episode which I acquired from.. sources. I wonder how the scene would go down if played today...

As the clip shows, it has the Fox logo in the bottom right-hand corner. So, if Fox showed it, i'd say Sky did also. I'd say people wouldn't have batted an eyelid at it before the WTC attacks.

Depends on the country... in the US, it would probably have gotten Family Guy re-cancelled, if shown today. But i'd say it'd be shown no hassle if the episode was ever repeated on Irish TV. As did you ever notice the amount of unseen bits from old Simpsons episodes when they're broadcast on RTE2? It's obviously Sky butchered all offensive material out before the watershed.

An example that comes to mind is: the Itchy & Scratchy movie episode... there's a couple driving down the road in their car. And they park under a billboard advertising the new movie. The billboard is a moving billboard with Itchy cutting the head off Scratchy and blood starts pouring down onto the couple and they start laughing.

I've seen that episode at least 3-4 times on Sky... but i've only seen that scene once when it was broadcast on RTE2 (or Network 2, in the good ol' days of mid 2004) :)

PS - it's also worth mentioning i'm referring to this scene when i saw it at least a year or two back... before the beheadings of Nick Berg etc which might have prompted Sky 1 to cut that scene.

Agreed. Bin Laden was certainly known as an international terrorist long before September 11th, so what has him positioned as a not-very-good/clever terrorist beforehand wouldn't look the same after the attacks. Still, I'm not in favour of revising it based on that - censorship never works. Far better to have left it in with a proviso on new DVDs that it was produced beforehand and no offence is intended.

Agreed. That said, though, we're not much better when the subject matter is closer to hand. An episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation was effectively banned in the UK and Ireland - and was only shown by Sky after the offending scene was chopped out. (Episode was "The High Ground" - had Data have a conversation with Picard which suggested the IRA would successfully unify Ireland in the 2020s as a direct result of carrying out terrorist attacks.)
    basquille wrote:

Used to deal with Sky in relation to this in an old job - trust me, 90% of their imported material is edited for content. (They are better of late, leaving it to mostly the black 'fade out' act breaks, but back when Buffy, Angel - even ER - were on Sky, there were cuts for content made all the time.)

Their programmes are noted for content/themes which may be offensive at a future time. (An X-Files was dropped the day Diana died, and for an Enterprise episode ("Shockwave"), it was once noted that burning buildings in the final scene might be reminiscent of the WTC attacks, and so shouldn't be screened around its anniversary.

    Hyper-sensitive? I often thought so.

Not to sound crass, but in relation to this, is Highlander being shown by anyone at the moment? I wonder if its broadcast would be considered appropriate while those types of tragedies are taking place...
