Returning ipod to apple for service/fix

My nephew's ipod has gone belly up (hes 15 and all his patience is already exhausted!!) Apples service procedure seems very tedious - request an empty box etc. Just wondering if anyone has had experience of returning an ipod and how long it all took before it was back in action.

I had to do this last year with my iPod. Got it back in a few days. The 'box' is pretty much required because you can be sure it'll be in pieces if left to the post office / courier company.
