windows Xp network places error

ok, I am having a weird problem. A network which was previously mostly windows 98 (not mine !!) with three NT4 Sp6a servers now got a few nice new XP machines (at last). When i go to Network Places and scroll through the network, i get as far as the server then it says access is denied..but when i go to it through UNC name…

ok,

When i go to Network Places and scroll through the network, i get as far as the server then it says access is denied..but when i go to it through UNC name it works!!! (e.g. \\servername)
Any ideas why this happens, it is two ladies using these pcs and this is not ideal as they need to be able to access this in things like open and save..
