Drivers from all over the Dublin Region are due to converge on the Red Cow
Inn next Monday 17th at 8pm to meet the Politicians about the on-going high
cost of motor Insurance. The Transport spokespersons from a number of the
main parties have agree to attend. "Insurance company profits have leaped
from €30 million in 1997 to €500 million last year at a time when many young
drivers are still being asked to pay over €4,000 per annum for insurance.
The Politicians are being asked to intervene and regulate this industry"
said Mick Murphy the National Organiser of MIJAG (mijag.com) the Motor
Insurance Justice Action Group who are organising the meeting. "The average
insurance premium for under 25s has dropped and that is to be welcome but
considering the huge profits being made all beginners should start off on
the average premium which now stands at €630 euro and that should remain the
same unless proven safety related driving offences are committed" Mr Murphy
said. "This would create a massive incentive for beginners to be careful on
    the road" Mr Murphy added.

I hope the meeting goes well and something gets done about the ridiculous cost of insurance for young male drivers especially but...

That idea to set premiums at 630€ imo is totally unrealistic. There is no way in hell any government is going to force this on insurance companies. Surely a more realistic proposal might have some chance in getting people to seriously consider implementing the neccessary changes.

As an example of what i'd consider a reasonable suggestion would be as follows:

Have a series of levels. When a driver has a full-licence they begin at level 10. Then every year of accident free driving they drop a level until finally reaching level zero. Should they have an accident they move up a number of levels based on the seriousness of the accident (Maybe level 15 is max, with levels 10 - 15 seriously weighted cost-wise).

A cost of 1200-1500 per year for an average car size for drivers at level 10 imo would be reasonable.

Again good luck with the meeting.

it went OK. No government representatives but what a surprise.

As usual politicians promised to pick up on the issue when they get elected and promised to have it on their agenda.

the thing is it looks like there is more people with the same problem including

-transport companies paying mad money for truck insurance what was 100.000 before is 500.000 now
    -bikers
    -trade people
    -young guys
-van drivers which drive for 15 years and get mad quotes on private motor insurance
    -motorcycle retailers
-some individuals with spouses that could not get insurance due to the fact e.g. that they came from US

it was nice to hear what they had to say in regards to entire situation.

    what a f€cked up situation

Well what would you expect, they have nothing to gain there, if they had turned
up it would have turned into a slagging match with every other parties representitive
slagging them and trying to score points against the government and no one else
would have got a word in edgeways..

They are all the same, no one is going to stand up againt the insurance companies
in the country as lord knows how many donations they make towards each party's
political campaigns.. its all a complete farce..

As usual politicians promised to pick up on the issue when they get elected and promised to have it on their agenda.

Surprise surprise.. all complete bullsh*t and empty promises...

The have one agenda to get into government and as soon as they get in there with
their nice comfy offices and large expense accounts the real agenda comes out.. to
milk the country and taxpayer for what they can and line their own pockets..

Most of them are worse than what you'd find in any high security prison in the in
    country...

I think MIJAG are doing a great job in highlighting the issue and making the public
aware of whats happening.. but how will anyone ever stand a chance of getting
anything done when you step back and take a look at the scum that are running for
    office..
