Daily Mirror editor Piers Morgan is sacked following pressure over faked photos of soldiers abusing an Iraqi prisoner.
The Queen's Lancashire Regiment earlier told a press conference the Mirror had to apologise for running the pictures and endangering British troops.

A statement from the Mirror said it had fallen victim to a "calculated and malicious hoax". The Mirror board said it would be "inappropriate" for Morgan to continue.

Interesting stuff, although it was hard to see anything else happening once the pictures were confirmed as fake...

Will this effect newspaper media though? Will they be more careful with their sources in future?

Indeed, he had no choice but to fall on his sword.

Morgan got this one seriously wrong: in the face of universal doubt about the veracity of these photo's he continued for the last two weeks to portray them as real without offering a shred of evidence.

In the process he diminished the reputation of an entire regiment, put the lives of serving soldiers at risk, and created a dangerous image in Arab minds. And that's before we even consider the damage done to the perceived integrity of the press.

The f****r should never get another job in the print media again, but I guess that is too much to hope for.

dont be so hasty, I cant imagine him being picked up by any mainstream media now, and due to his personality and views, papers like The Sun aint gonna touch him.

It was foolish of him to be so arrogant about the pictures, surely he would have softened his tone just incase, but perhaps he felt like he had to back them 100%... but this is the price payed for badly researched journalism, and of course the possible risks that the regiment and British armies now have to face for something they didnt do (or havent been proven of doing)

I think his profile as a "celeditor" (celebrity editor) detached him from reality somewhat. It's reported today that he was asked to make a public apology and he refused and was then escorted from Mirror HQ.

That's pretty pathetic if you ask me. I've seen him interviewed for different shows where he talks about "the buck stops with me". He's a creep with no morals and if I were an employer, I wouldn't consider him for any position of responsibility EVER. And you know, I don't think he will ever see editorship of ANY newspaper ever again.

he certainly seems like one of those people that will do anything to get to the top.

I also doubt he will be editing a mainstream paper ever again, but I can see alot for him to do, such as books, interviews, and I dont doubt he'll have his own show (perhaps a littlejohn style thing) within the year
