Virus symptoms on Win2k - please help!

Hi All,
I've been having this problem on windows 2000 pro for a while now. I have Norton Anti Virus installed and its virus definitions are up to date. I have performed numerous scans but I can't seem to find anything. I have also run the WelchiaWorm fix from Symantec's website and apparently, there are no instances of the Welchia virus on my machine either.
Here are the symptoms : -
Connected to the internet via a 56K modem. Could run fine for the duration of the time online, but more often than not, the following happens.

I'm unable to copy or paste from any source (Word, Internet Explorer Notepad etc.)
I'm unable to save webpages (the option is simply greyed out in the File menu)
When I click on the '2 little monitors' in the system tray that appears when you are online, nothing happens. Right clicking on this icon will give me a menu, but when I click on 'disconnect', nothing happens. I have to shut down the machine in order to disconnect.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? Any help would be great as this problem is becoming a real pain. I have a friend with the same symptoms also.

One other thing, it seems to happen more frequently on certain user accounts. I don't know if this is any help.

hummmmmm, Could be a virus but with VIRD up to date I dont think so, this could be caused by errors in the registry, Get yourself a reg scanner e.g. TuneUp utilities has a good.

had similar before & was caused by virus.
I downloaded the stinger from McAffee, ran it and then installed AVG which worked a treat.

Its a great free tool, I run it first in report mode < Check under preferance's >

and then let it see if you have any infections.

If you do then run it in delete/repair mode to fix your problem, if it doesnt fix your problem at least then you will know the exact virus you have and go search for that Virus specific removal tool. The Symantic site is good for specific removal tools http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/tools.list.html

If that doesnt help I would start looking into Spy/Malware < You should have these anyway, you will be surprised at the amount of Crap they pull off your PC. >

Also make sure you are fully patched and up to date and keep it uptodate

and a firewall would certainly help something free like Zonealarm should do the job

its probaly crappy anti virus software trying to protect you from something you dont need to be protected from
turn off your anti virus software or un install it
just keep your windows updates up to date and use a firewall
and be sensible when opening emails
most of the time anti virus software is not really protecting you
its protecting against stuff that has already been fixed
i mean they cant protect you from something that has not been created yet
and thats where the danger is

I was just wondering if you managed to find out what was causing these symptoms. I am experiencing the exact same symptoms on win 2k, installed AV software with latest definitions and that didn't find anything. I've also ran spyware scans still nothing!

Sorry mate, no solution as yet. I've tried all the suggestions on this thread and still, the same thing keeps happening. I could be dialled up for a while, then all of a sudden, the 2 screens in the system tray cannot be clicked on and I cannot disconnect from the internet....very strange.
