(Mark if this is in the wrong place feel free to move it)

My dad is very keen on the American Civil War but I've never been able to find a decent book on the era. I've bought him one or two over the years but they've never really held his interest as much as I'd like a book to.

Can anyone recommend a decent book on the era as I'd like to maybe pick it up for him for fathers day or something.

    Thanks in advance.

    A.M.

    It depends on your fancy:
Fiction - The Killer Angels triology by Michael Shaara is excellent
Non-fiction - This Hallowed Ground by Bruce Catton
also you could try a Bios
    "General Grant" by Perret ,
    "Lee" by Freeman
    "General Longstreet" by Vert
    "Sherman" by Marszalek

also Turtledove did an alternative history version of the Civil War
"Guns of the South" + "Marching through Peacetree"
