Hi,

I'm a noob, so be gentle.

BTW-this is my first post.

I have a class idea for a pc or console game, and I want to make some money off it, but, I am not a games designer and wouldn't know where to start.

I was thinking I could flog the idea, but whats the likelyhood of a games company being interested?

I'd be interested in hearing any ideas.

First of all, if you're absolutely sure it's a fantastic idea that'll make the developers go wow and the public shout "IT MUST BE MINE!", then post the idea to yourself. Then tell a games company. If they use it without paying you, show them the post.

You mean registered post? Good idea. I think you can patent/copyright it too at Dublin Castle, but I'm not sure if a concept is enough.

I had the concept a few years back, and just passed it off, I figured someone would come up with a game similar, but it hasn't happened yet. It's quite simple really, but I think if it was done right, it would be a big hit.

first things first go google and search for the game, variations of the game etc. see if it really is completely original.

write up a design doc for the game. (there's loads of sites on that topic, i just picked one at random.)

as said, post it to urself.

After that, well... you'll need to get the right people to see it, which is hard. Look around for competitions, like the dare to be digital one etc. Other than that, i suppose you could send it to ppl, but i can't imagine how many 'c00l ideas for my game' they get from 14 year olds every day so best of luck.

btw. this should proddy be in games/game editing.

draft a non disclosure form - then have a little chat with a trusted developer.
if it's viable and sounds good - send concept doc to a games company.

Right, the game is a beatem up, like Tekken, DOA etc. albeit the idea revamped. You start the game by designing your charecter, the usual WWF style charecter generator, where you can specify body, hair colour etc.
Then you begin fighting on the mean streets for cash. Your charecter is restricted to basic moves such as kick, punch headbutt, just street fighting skills. When you win fights you earn cash, which you can buy concealed weapons, knuckle dusters etc. or you can use the money to get proper martial arts training. Lets say, you have earned enough for two lessons, you choose what dojo you would like to train in, and what style you would like to begin learning(kung fu, taekwondo etc.) After two lessons you may learn, for an example, an axe kick, which you can use in your street fights to win. As you progress in your dojo training, you move up grades, or belts. After a while, your sensei gives you the option to enter competitions. When you fight in competitions you develop a reputation, depending on the way you fight. There would be an option for 'dirty fighting' in competitions, and this can effect your reputation, ie: the way you are booed coming into a stadium, the way you are displayed in the fighting mags etc. If you develop a bad rep, you may have the option of fighting in underground matches, fight to the death sort of stuff, where you can earn lots of moula and an even worse rep, and possibly get banned from competition fighting.
So, without giving away too much more, to sum up, it would be a beatem up rpg.

i haven't actually played it. but you've just described how i imagine shenmue to play...

xbox and dreamcast only afaik.

read a couple of reviews of it to get a gist of what it's about.
try eurogamer.net and ign.com for a start

shenmue 2 was released on the xbox with a video dvd of shenmue 1 iirc

Actuay it sounds kinda like that game way of the samurai. (not sure if it was way of or sword of the samurai tbh) youd train in different dojos, learn different techniques, fight people to win their swords etc etc. Good game but cause it was produced on the cheap, it was ugly and lacked atmosphere.

Girlfriend bought me PS2 at xmas to console me. Get it? Anyhoo, no more sex box for me. Is it out on the PC?

before i begin, (excuse the ignorance) what does afaik mean?

last week on "around the world in 80 games" on bravo, they went to a design company (in california me thinks) that offers its code - or engine or whatever the heart of a game is called - to independant game designers for only about $100, and it takes a (relatively) small percentage of any profits you make.
it seemed really good for independants like yourself, possibly, to get a break in the games scene.
i forget their name, but they are quite succesful due to this in the states so if you google some of the keywords or check out the bravo website etc you might find them.

welcome to boards mate. i like your idea but it does sound a little too similar to titles already on the market, reminded me alot of def jam vendetta, have you played it? you should rent it just to see what the competition is like. As others have stated the idea needs more of an x-factor sorry about the cliche but you know what i mean. had an idea for a game myself recently. in a dream.

here's the pitch:

you got all these naked women, right.
then you press 'space' (i'll make it 'X' when it gets ported to the PS2) and more women appear.

that's the basic idea so far. might implement a multiplayer element into it in a patch later on.

btw. i'm gonna post it to myself so no theivin'. *points finger and looks around suspiciously*
