I think it was banned for the same reason as the book, I havent read or seen either, so Im not certain what the reason is.
I think it was something to do with questions raised regarding religion, the sexual nature of Blooms thoughts and other such non-catholic ways of thinking.

I saw the DVD the other day, a nicely timed push for the 100 years celebration... I liked the review on the front of it... something like 'a good attempt at the book'.....

Literary critic John Greenway observed, "To read it with ease, one should have a PhD in comparative languages and literature." Indeed, Joyce himself spoke some 15 languages fluently and his work abounds with multiple lingual puns. Caveat: unless you have at least majored in English Literature and taken a graduate course in James Joyce, you won't have the slightest idea what is going on here - nor will you care.

(From the end of the IMDB review).

What a bad review! You don't have to understand every single reference in the book to enjoy it!

According to this page on RTÉ's website, the book was never banned in Ireland:
It was banned in the United States and Britain for some years but by 1936 was freely available in both countries. Curiously, it was never banned in Ireland.

I guess they thought books are less likely to corrupt than films.

Not true though, I read some pretty hard-core porn books for uni!

Oh and has anyone seen that film Bloom (based on Ulysses again)? I'm not sure if it's out yet but I heard ads for it on the radio a while ago.

Didn't see it myself, but it's been and gone as far as I know in the cinema.
