I must be losing my touch, I hadn't heard about this at all.
Decision due on Amazon European hub
    Thursday, May 20 2004
    by Matthew Clark

Internet retailer Amazon.com is said to be close to making a decision on the location of a new European operations centre.

The pending decision could have big implications for Ireland, since Dublin has already been named in media reports as a strong possibility for the new operation. It is thought that an Amazon.com operations hub could bring with it hundreds of new high-tech and customer service jobs.

Though IDA Ireland has admitted to meeting with Amazon in the past, spokespeople for the organisation declined to comment on speculation that the decision was imminent. A spokesperson for Amazon.com in the UK also declined to comment on the matter.

Nevertheless, sources say that Amazon executives have visited Ireland several more times since December, when the news first broke that Dublin was being eyed by the firm. It is understood that company executives are torn between Dublin and a competing location in Luxembourg.

Didn't hear about this either, but Luxembourg have the lowest VAT rate in the EU (is it 15%?), which means your books will be that much cheaper if they settle there.

Our books are 0% or 12.5%. Our CDs are 21%.

There are some rumours about Shannon as well but maybe its just the warehousing end of the system.

I hope this means we don't get ripped off with shipping charges anymore if they move the warehousing to Ireland!

Perhaps now we'll get a proper amazon.ie with fixed euro prices instead of prices saying "£y (around €x)".

    From Indo breaking news...
Amazon.com, one of the world's largest Internet retailers, is reportedly close to signing a deal to establish a customer support and administrative centre in Ireland. Reports this morning said the US firm was considering setting up two facilities in Dublin and Cork that would employ more than 200 staff. Industry sources have reportedly indicated that negotiations between Amazon and the IDA are at an advanced stage. Amazon is one of the world's three leading Internet firms. The other two, Google and eBay, already have Irish operations employing more than 1,000 people.

    Would be good to see.
