Railway line to be diverted for €31m city bypass
    From:The Irish Independent
    Friday, 21st May, 2004

A MAJOR railway line is to be diverted by more than a kilometre to allow the construction of the new Kilkenny bypass, it was confirmed last night.

Transport Minister Seamus Brennan approved the re-routing of the main Dublin-to-Kilkenny line to allow the new €31m roadway to go ahead.

The 4.2km ring road scheme will carry 10,000 vehicles a day.

The minister said Kilkenny County Council and the National Roads Authority would now finalise contract documents, with work due to begin early next year.

"The scheme is a vital piece of infrastructure for Kilkenny as it will significantly reduce traffic congestion in the city centre."

The ring road scheme consists of 4.2km of new single carriageway from the existing Carlow Road roundabout to a new roundabout north of Glendine on the Castlecomer Road.

It involves building a new bridge over the Kilkenny-Dublin rail line and a 1,120 metre diversion of a stretch of rail track.
