I've asked alot of people what they think the best hand in Poker is,

all them said "Royal Flush", But they are wrong. the best hand in poker is 4 Aces. nothing can beat or draw with 4 Aces, but if you have a Royal Flush, you can draw if someone else has a Royal Flush ,

What about a staright flush eg 5c6c7c8c9c that beats 4 aces

Maybe you should revisit the poker ladder

Player 1 holds 2 aces. Player 2 holds KQ of diamonds. Flop come Ad Ah Jd turn or river comes 10d. Player one has poker of aces, sweet. Player 2 has royal flush. Observe how the poker of aces is beat.

Ace,2,3,4,5 of the same suit will beat a poker of aces.

I presume you are talking about draw or stud poker where there are no community cards. In this case if one player had a poker of aces when it is true that no-one else could have a royal flush. But, another player could still have a straight flush which would still beat the poker of aces.

You do not need a royal flush to beat a poker.

even in five card draw it is possible to beat quad aces with a straight flush. draw is unique though in that it's the only game that has a hand that actually does beat a royal flush - and that's 5 aces, made possible by the joker which can be used as an ace or to complete a straight or flush. just a little bit unlikely though

Royal Flush e.g. Ad Kd Qd Jd 10d (or any other suit)
    Straight Flush e.g. 7s 6s 5s 4s 3s (or any other suit)
4 of a kind e.g. Kh Kd Kc Ks 5h
    Full house e.g. 4s 4d 4h 6c 6h
    Blue e.g. 2h 6h 9h Kh Qh
    Straight (aka a Run) e.g. 2h 3s 4d 5d 6c
Three of a kind e.g. Qh Qs Qc 8d 9s
    Two Pair e.g. Js Jd 3s 3d 9c
    A Pair e.g. Kh Kc Jc 5s 3d

Contrary to popular belief 5 Aces as quoted above does not beat a straight flush or a royal flush. Anyway playing with Wild Cards is not really Poker it is variations on Poker.

I think never saw the error in his thinking and did realise that it does not have to be an ace high straight flush to beat a poker of aces. Why is the royal flush always listed separately from the straight flush? I mean it is still a straight flush it’s just ace high.

    to defend my position:

In five card draw the standard game is played with a joker, and the highest possible hand is five aces. it's the only casino game that's played with a joker, apart from the now almost defunct ace to five lowball

The straight flush is a relative newcomer to the ranking of hands. Four of a kind was the highest ranked hand and of course four Aces was the highest ranked of those. But it was not the only unbeatable hand. In draw poker, you could be certain of winning with four kings, provided your fifth card was an Ace.

Matamatically a straight flush is less likely than five aces.

please note this was just maths done with the calculator on the pc, i accept no responsibility for gaming losses due to this statement

with a fifty-three card deck that includes the joker, the odds of being dealt five aces are 2,869,684 to 1.
the odds of being dealt a straight flush are 14,066 to 1.

there are 204 possible combinations of 5 cards that will give you a straight flush. there is one possible combination of cards that will give you five aces.

    these figures include the joker.

Must remember to bring a joker along to the fitz the next time. Guaranteed winnings!

    Hi,

I notice everyone gets real technical as soon as there is a joker in the deck. I'm assuming you have taken the joker into consideration for the straight flush. The numbers seem a bit odd though, I'll send Frankie the Hammer around to check your calculator:).

    Alex

ps the home games we normally play have a few jokers in the deck ... DeVore, lalalalafortezza to name a few. Oh, I almost forgot dappergent:)
