They both have played some amazing solos. Hammet really defined Metal guitar playing up until he started playing that same damn blues solo in every wretched song. Friedman is a substantially more talented guitarist, Tornado Of Souls and Symphony Of Destruction are two of the greatest examples of guitar playing I can think of but Kirk... well he always seemed to play the right thing, check out the whammy solo on the end of The Thing That Should Not Be or the solo in Blackened.

In their day they were peerless and I couldn't choose between either one TBH, very different but totally appropriate for the great music they were once a part of.

    Friedman. All the way.

Hammett blows. He over uses the wah and plays the same scale over and over.

Hammett for coming up with the riff of the 90s (Sandman) and spearheading metal to the forefront of music.

Sorry not sound like a complete newb but who is friedman and whose does he play with?

I think that hammet is pretty class but would have to agree with pornapster, he does over use the wah a bit.

What do ya think of Michael Angelo of Nitro. The fastest guitarist in the world

    'no guff'

I also think that satriani is a little over rated...i mean he can play guitar like a mofo but again he's a little over-rated

Friedman played with Megadeth, great guitarist. He's appearing on a song on the upcoming Fozzy album, which I'm sure people will hear more about over the summer.

I'd say that Friedman is the better guitarist, although there's plenty of Hammett stuff that is better than Marty's. Tough to say really.

Yeah right, its not country and western. Credit where credit is due, the man is excellent.
A lot of riffs he plays are fast and complicated, your bound to get them wrong sometimes, especially live.

And no, i am not a metallica fan, but i give respect where its due. Friedman is good but Hammet is a lot better..

And Megadeth's riffs aren't fast or complicated...

    Freidman = Professional guitarist.
    Hammett = Jimi Hendrix wannabe.

I agree that Hammett came up with one of the catchiest riffs of the 90's. Fair play to him, but how many other riffs has he come up with? His solo's are dodgy to say the least.

Freidman is an all round solid guitar player. Just listen to Hangar 18, Tornado of Souls or Holy Wars

what riff is one of the catchiest? dont say enter sandman.

    I'm afraid so.

Id go with Freidman for sheer consistancy. Hammet has some excellent stuff, but some really, genrally, poo music, and Hammet will never write a song like Hanger 18, 6 solo's or something in a 5 minute song, really great to listen to aswell. On sayign that I really liked the guitar work on 'Master of Puppet's, but thats about it for Hammet really.

  • Registered Users Posts: 767 ✭✭✭nesthead

listening to Rust In Peace right now................ fcuking jesus.

Hammett sucks. Freidman is ****ing incredible. this is a stupid debate. sorry to over-simplify but its an axiom or whatever (i.e. the answer is so blatantly obvious it doesnt even need proving, but just in case you feel like it, listen to Hangar 18)

ohh yeah... didnt Hetfield write the Enter Sandman riff?

  • Registered Users Posts: 257 ✭✭irokie

i think kirk is a guitarist who really needs to work at things. it doesn't come naturally.
he really has to push himself particularly these days.

Friedman is a totally different player! he's a jazz musician ffs. they're both great in their own ways.

also, it's not fair to compare them currently...
look at kirk back in the day. if you see the cliff em all video, you know that kirk could throw down. that man riffs the 5h1t out of his guitar. it's sweet.

i just think he's past his prime a little. he's got complacent

    but still ro><0rz

Sandman was Hammetts riff not Hetfields- Nesthead, do you know anything about the guvnors?

Hammet blows.......... I dont like Metal but I can hear that he blows, I quite like Marty, I've could never listen to a megadeath song in full but I have heard some of Marty's solo stuff. Quite good, and uses those exotic scales to great effect. Hammet is an arsehole who stole everything he played from jamming with Joe Satriani, unfortunatly he couldn't play it as good.

How could someone say Joe Satriani is overated. Hes god, the only person who can compare is Steve Vai. Satriani is a complete legend.

I think there are 18 solos for hangar 18.

Not bad considering the song is only 5:14 long.

I'm a big metallica fan and have seen them live - My only criticisms of Kirk is he's gotten lazy as of late, and he drowns his solos in wah to cover the fact up.

Friedman is class also. I'd rate them equally as high (taking their peak moments side by side).

Still, we can always remember the first 4 albums. *sigh*

My friend had a lend of Freidman instructional tape once. That guy is a weird bastard; he picks up all the time(outside of alternate picking) to avoid the possibility of tiny pick scratch sounds.
I'd say Friedman is better. Hammett has some good solos, but not enough good solos.

They're both great guitarists but overall Friedman is a far better musician

They pushed crap music to the forefront in the 90's. And they're continuing it into the next century!

Then you're talking about Hammett's first 3 albums, aren't you? Mustaine played on Kill 'Em All.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,967 ✭✭✭Dun

Nope, Kirk Hammett played on Kill 'em All. Though Mustaine obviously has a lot of writing credits :)

Ah, just me getting mixed up again. Although it's sort of been accepted that Hammett is a great guitarist on this thread, but his writing leaves a bit to be desired. So, the point about his first 3 (writing) and not 4 albums still stands. RTL, MOP and AJFA contain the best Hammett work. But Friedman has a lot of better written stuff I think.
