The Brussells base international crisis group have called for UN intervention in Sudan:
The UN's "inaction" in the face of mounting reports of continuing atrocities is believed to have prompted the IGC's call for decisive action from the UN.
    The full story is here

A million people displaced and all the children-why isn't Michael D higgins shouting about this every night on the tv-Is it because that favourite dartboard the U.S isn't primarally involved?

It's a good example of the divided nature of the 'United Nations'. It has been UN staff who have been doing much of the awareness raising about the atrocities in Sudan, but the Security Council members are just sitting on their hands and refusing to do anything about it.

So yes, the Security Council is in many cases quite useless. It is also a glaring contradiction to the ideals of the United Nations. But it obviously serves the interests of the most powerful states, so that's why it has survived.
