Roscommon V Sligo

Any predictions for the next day? Comments on last Sunday? Thought both teams were very poor but Ros were fantastic in the first half.

Sligo turned very cynical and O Hara in particular turned things into a dog-fight. Less high-profile players would of been in trouble with the ref. Think Ros have the beating of them. Sligo have nothing up front and were most effective with 5-6 players charging forward from mid-field.

Roscommon have a very dodgy defence. I think if their forwards don't play well they will lose.

I kinda fancy Sligo to come through, but having said that I expected them to win the first game by a few points and they had to pull it out of the fire. They did score a couple of fine points towards the end when breaking forward from midfield, as porn just said. Home advantage should help them slip through though.

Roscommon a dodgy defence? Thats mad!! The full back line is the best line on the team. Ryan is very solid as are Nolan and Whyte. They kept them in it the last day with some great tackles and sturdy tackles

I've seen them play Cavan two years ago. We scored 5-13. Great defence altogether.

In fairness I would think Roscommon are solid enough in the back line. (cavan game once off and long time ago). They need another midfielder and the majority of their forwards consistantly fail to contribute to the game.

Sligo, I completely disregard. They are completely beatable. They have nothing up front and weak at the back also. Never seen them as cynical as they were the last day. I think people need to put the great sligo come-back in the context that Roscommon did score for the final 33 minutes of the second half!!!

that Roscommon defence vs Cavan way back then had a totally different lineup. Our forwards that day scored something unreal like 3-12 (enough to win any match)

And I still think Roscommon have a lot more room for improvement than Sligo. Sligo really are a very average team who rely on O'Hara to drag them through a game. If Roscommon put a runner with him the next day then he can be marked out of it

I think you boys are being a bit harsh on Sligo here. I did not see the whole game at the weekend so I can not really comment on that but if Roscommon were kept scoreless for 33 minutes surely Sligo did something right! Also they have had a couple of good runs in the qualifiers in recent years. They can not be as bad a team as you are making them out to be.

I think Ros at their best are a better side than Sligo at their best. But if Ros forwards have an off day (which happens all too frequently), it brings them right back down to, or even beneath, Sligo's level.

IMO, Ros were unquestionably the better team, but weakness, both mentally and physically, cost them the win. When Sligo got tough (dirty?) Ros couldnt handle it, and Sligo seem to have a lot more bottle (but then again, the team making the comeback always appears to have more bottle, so maybe I'm being a bit unfair on Ros).

Eamon O'Hara and Shamie O'Neill are both excellent players, and if they didnt hate each other before Sunday, they certainly do now!

    My prediction for Sunday:
    A big mill

I fancied Ros before last Sunday, now I'm far less sure. But if pushed I'd stick with them, on the basis they'll have the best forward on show in their line-up.

I wrote this in a different thread but it probably should go in here also:

No. Cake is a fantastic shot-stopper. He's comparable to Davi Fitz for Clare hurling. You can't argue that Curran doesnt give the team something more than the traditional keeper. His pint which should of won Ros the match was one of the greatest moments in GAA i've witnesses and would of gone down in history had the Ref found his whistle to end things. His humour shaking the hand of Sligo's Paul Taylor before the penalty, his Bruce Grobbelar antics before the kick, and Taylors own humour to walk in a shake Currans hand after burying the penalty were magic moments in a first round championship match.

SligoVRos was the best match I've been at in years. It had everything from humour, anxiety, relief and happiness. It was fasinating stuff. I am completely disgusted by the coverage this game has received from all aspects of the media and especially the Sunday Game last night. The fact that the match was not televised in the first place instead of "little house on the prairie" or whatever was on at the time was a bigger disgrace.

The only match reports I've read have included "token" crappy sayings and none have properly captured how much this match was enjoyed by all in attendance. (yesterday Times is good though). I think this game will stand to both Ros and Sligo in the championship but it also showed Sligos one-dimensional aspects. The are limited in the forwards and over-rely on oHara. Their "pack-like" running forward game is dated and expected from the opposition. With the hits Ros were putting in their game soon became too demanding.

Ros also showed that more of their forwards need to contribute to the game. Young Connellan, Henegan, and Nigel Dineen all need to step things up. Cox can also raise his game but contributed well. I thought J Tiernan and Dunning did well in linking up the forwards to the rest of the team when they came on and Dunning is sure to start the next day. F Grehan played brilliantly when moved to centre half forward in extra time and David Casey play like a man posssessed on his introduction. The backs for Ros were all good but in particular Ros Mixer Ryan was tidy. But John Whyte in corner back deserves a special mention. His shoulder which nailed Sligo no 13 on the way through drew a groan from the crowd and sent the message to the Sligo forwards that if they wanted their points they would have to fight for them. O hara and O neill had a great battle in Midfield with Stevie Lohan stepping things up for Ros from the last day. If this is a sign that S Lohan can continue to improve in the midfield position then things are looking rosy for Roscommon. The tactical play of Tommy Carr in particular was superb and caught Sligo off balance on several occasions. S ONeill deciding to break ball in the second half worked particularly well and prevented O hara from gathering clean possession.

A special mention has to be given also to the referee who needs to trade in his egg-timer for a stop watch pretty quickly. He played damn near 5 mins of extra time when only 3 were called at the end of the game allowing Sligo to equalise. Also the end of theextra time was delayed for similar reasons. Sending off Dolan, allowing O Hara to stand only 9 yards from Curran's memorable point and several penalty decisions were all dodgy decisions.

Roll on the Leitrim muck-savages, ya may stay hidden in yer long grass cos the Rossies are humming like a lawnmower this year!!!

So Ros got through on Saturday evening thanks to a dodgy Ref and Sligo's messing in front of the goal instead of just fisting da bloody ball over the bar.

If Sligo can lift themselves after the weekend, they may be able to put a run together in the qualifers. Galway again in Connacht and no further.

From what I have seen so far, I think the big match coming up is the Ulster Final between Tyrone & Armagh. Any chance of switching this to Croke Park so the rest of the country can get tickets to see ?????

What won the game was the extra speed they had in extra time John Tiernan and Dunning Frankie Dolan was very poor over the two games even Cake could do his job score freekicks he dose not score to much pints from play :D:D:D:D

The ref gave more to Sligo in fairness - he penalised Ros countless times for nothing - Sligo penalty, extra 2 minutes at end of normal time, 'pick off the ground' by Michael Ryan - what a joke!!, Frankie's sending off, 2 extra minutes at end of extra time!!

I don't know how many chances the ref gave Sligo to stay in the game.

I know even with a more dodgy referrring decisions against Roscommon than Sligo, Roscommon progressed, I can't remember any incident where a Sligo man was in position to fist over the bar instead of kicking!!!!!!! Unless you want players to start fisting for 20 yards out!!!(i dont think fisting is more accurate unless in close).
If Sligo can lift themselves after the weekend, they may be able to put a run together in the qualifers. Galway again in Connacht and no further.
Mayo and Roscommon might have something to say about that yet. In fact Mayo are sitting nicely for this one

theres plenty more big matches coming up!!!!! Why does Croke Park mean the rest of the country? Your not from Dublin are you? If you are the road to Clones (or whereever) is a good one. Are you more important than Armagh and Tyrone supporters?

    PS
I've had an after-thought in relation to the match being televised "live". I think the reasoning is sound not to televise Saturday football and have more games in provincial locations. But I dont think the coverage received by the Sunday Game and the wkend newspapers did the game any justice. Im looking forward to the match on TNG tonight

F Dolan had been sent off when cake stepped up to "do his job!"F Dolan is one of the best forwards in the country. I'd never write him off. He's fierce tempermental though
