Nope I just cant get "into" this game. I tried it on the PC first and found it to be a bit bland, then after many good reviews picked it up on the PS2. Same thing.

The controls seem overly complex and I just cant seem to find anything that impresses me about it, I've played 100's of FPS before and this is one of the most forgettable.

    What have I missed ?.

Didn't like it myself either. Others claim it to be one of the all time greats, but it was very 'meh' for me.

Its just one of those things. Its not for everyone. Just like Daikatana ;)

Yeah, I didn't like it all either. I tried it on the PC and XBOX. The PC version just has too many complicated controls and menus. And I don't like analogue sticks on consoles. It got rave reviews in all the PC gaming mags too

I loved the first one. Invisible War doesnt know whether to be a console game or PC game and gets horribly stuck in the middle!

    I gives it 2 g's!

I thinks thats your problem. Deus Ex is not a true FPS. It is a hybrid on many styles and genres- elements of stealth, PRGs, adventure games etc. If you paly it like a traditional FPS, you're missing the quailty of the game. Each area/problem has many different solutions to the problems. The character development is key here also. You could play as a hacker/sniper/stealthy ninja....
The story/game world is brilliant, graphics aren't bad for its age, its so good.

I have to say this is probally one of the best games ever!

I've only played the demo and apart from the "ooo look how pretty the shadows are" I'm very much in the Meh camp.

Wasnt blown away either, but I find it odd the controls are causing trouble... they are seriously dumbed down compared to a geniune PC FPS style game. What in particular is difficult?

Seeing as how you mention you have it on the ps2 it must be the original and not Invisible War sooooo....

Try at least to get as far as the Hong Kong section: if you're not engrossed in the game by there then you'll probably never be.

    Also,
saying that it's not like 100's of other FPS's misses the point ; it's an RPG

    Controls:
They dont seem intuitive to me, I suppose I could customise them to my own tastes, but just too fiddly in default mode.

Look at Red Faction/Timesplitters2 for a better control interface.

    FPS/RPG/WTH ?:
Yeah I kinda gathered that there was a bit more going on that your traditional linear FPS, All that added depth didnt make it a better game for me though. Its probably related to my dislike of games like Theif etc, too much waiting around and not enough action.

I'll give it another level of two and see how it goes. Ta.

never thought much of the graphics meeself...but i loved the game. I think the best way to get into the game is play the first level...then play it again but make a point on doing it differently, and then just continue along the one of the 2 saved games you perferred.

I did that by accident first time i played it (game wouldnt save grr so had to reinstall) and it made the fact that it has so much choice more apparant to me...so i ended up playing almost every level to death checking all the secrets stories etc etc.

but i guess its not a game for everyones taste. I know a m8 who hates simpky cause its too slow for him. Its great for choice but if you try and set it so your character is completely action orienated (beef up weapon skillz etc) its not exactly the best action shooter with these up so high. I like it cause i mix between two types (hacker, stealth. Strength, speed) and this covers for the obvious lack in the direct action gamesplay...

have played the first and second one , never could get into them.... Hated the way it took so many shots to kill people in first...and apart from the purty graphics the second one was ****...really linear

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,459 ✭✭✭seanos

First one is a truely brillant game which I've replayed many times, and still throughly enjoy - graphics quite nice, but the true brillance of the game has to be storyline & role you play / abilities / all things to play with.

The second one [which mensioned fair bit] tries to be more of a console game, and simplify everything more, and be shorter, and numerous other bad bad things. It's still an ok/playable game, but if you put it within 100feet of the orignal, it begins to look like 90yr old pornstar.

I really, really disliked the first couple of levels, its a game in a genre all its own really, once you are nearly finished with crumby ole new york it gets really really good

the first few levels consisted of me walking about cursing asking the computer why the **** this was that... etc.

Please give it a chance, I promise you will be entertained, once you start getting to grips with the weapon and upgrade system it get coo

    peace out

Deus Ex was a great game, is a great game, and will always remain a great game. Anyone who says that it's not fast enough or doesn't concentrate enough on action is really missing out on the RPG elements. The storyline is thoroughly engrossing, the character action is good (great at the time). The stealth element really adds to the gameplay. If you go into a place all guns blazing you will likely get yourself killed. Personally, I think Ion Storm got the mixture of tactics and combat just right.

Deus Ex 2 however was a huge disappointment. It's a console game that tries to be a PC game and fails.

I hate most FPS games, but I love Deus Ex. (Note use of present tense - I'm still only playing it for the second time. I bought it for a fiver a few weeks ago. Yes, I am cheap.)

It's the most layered game I've played for some time - and is it true that you get a bonus if you find all the literary references?

Loved the first one, solid gold from start to finish.
I've only played a demo of the second one though, I didn't like the new interface... bring back the old tool belt layout tbh.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,436 ✭✭✭bugler

    I loved it.

I found it very atmospheric and liked the way it didn't project things as being black and white, gave you choice and allowed you to play in the manner you saw fit. Some of the levels are brilliant, Hong Kong in particular. As for it being too hard to kill people, this is true to start with, which is why you're better off with the prod/tranq darts or even a knife. If you want to be a gunfighter as it were, you'd best spend your points on upgrading your pistol skills and aim for the head.

Deus Ex 1 was fun and innovative.

Deus Ex 2 is pandering to commercial success and a broad market appeal, sarcraficing many of the things that made the first good. I don't actually think Warren Spector was directly involved in this one either. I could make a c&p of a rant I made on another newsgroups I made about this game, but I think people would just intrepret it as trolling.

Think of it as a 3D Shadowrun, I like it, a lot, but sometimes its incredibly frustrating. I got through the whole damn level, taking extreme lengths to tranquilise rather than kill everybody, and then get told I'm too trigger happy. For a game that's trying to be open ended-ish, it could reward non-lethal methods a little...

I agree with JCDenton and wataru. The first two or three levels leave you a little bored, but the minte you enter the aircraft hanger, the game becomes one of the best games ever. From then on you're hooked. I personally believe that it has the best implemented plot in any game. It's near flawless.

But after reading he comments posted, I'm afraid to buy Invisible War. Please tell me that it's not crap! PLEASE!

Yeah same here, Invis war was one of those games I'd been looking forward to for months and would have run out and bought immediatly only for the bad reviews I've seen here... and of course my own experience with the demo, which wasn't really all that bad imo.

Played it through on X-box. I haven't played the first one so I can't compare too much with it.

As for IW, it promises more than it delivers in terms of plot variety and choice. Spoiler:
It basicly doesn't matter what choices you make along the way, none have any long term consequences

Ending is a bit weak too, leaving a very 'meh' taste in the mouth

Far as I'm aware, it does. Use non lethal methods for the first few levels and anna and gunther will get pissed of at ye for not killing anyone. Some dialogues also change
