    ord!
I know in another thread I said I’d do something indecent to drive a Ferrari, let alone own one, but in reality I doubt I ever buy one. All the cars I want to own are Fords. A Ferrari would be way down the list. Here’s my top five :

    1. GT40. They call it the GT because someone else owns the copyright to the GT40, but we all know what it is. I always loved the original. I don’t know what it is but for me it was always one of the best looking cars ever. The story goes that Ford tried to buy Ferrari but were knocked back. The Ford boss was so angry he ordered his engineers to build a car that would beat Ferrari. They came up with the GT40 and at Le Mans it did beat Ferrari. 4 times.
I love that. Ford has always been ‘the people’s car’ (actually a huge heartless corporation, I know) and they went out and beat the best sports-car/super-car/race-car maker at their own game. They let the engineers go wild – to build their dream car – and they built the best. I know that it’s stupid, but when you’re a kid the fact that a fantastic super-car has the same badge as your father’s car is something special.
The new car retains the spirit of the old car but I think it’s even better. I like the looks that bit more than the old car. It still goes 200mph+, but now it’s got power steering and ABS. It’s still a super-car but it’s that much easier to live with.
I think a Ferrari Modena comes in at Stg£108,000. The GT40 is expected to be about Stg£90,000. There’re limited edition so even if you do win the lotto, you’ll have to be best friends with Henry Ford (III) to get one. That means that just about everyone who buys one is going to really want one, so the chances of getting one second hand in a few years time are really low. I’m still dreaming of buying one in about 10 years time but it’s a very long shot. I’d want to get off my ass and get myself a high-paying career in the meantime.

    2. Focus Cosworth. It’s been delayed and delayed. The last I heard it was scheduled for this September but it might never arrive. It’s based on the new Focus platform, which is supposed to be an even better chassis than the old Focus. The old Focus had great handling and anyone who’s driven the new Focus C-Max which is also built on the new platform, thinks the new one will be even better. Combine it with a 2.0 turbo engine (the current rally car is 1.8) and 4 wheel drive and you’ve got a great car.
There’s always something special about a Cosworth. Long before anyone heard of a Scooby or an EVO the mere mention of a Cossie always put a tingle down your spine. It was that people’s car magic again. Your dad’s Escort looked just like the fastest car around.
And it was the fastest car around – just ask the police. So many of them were being used in bank robberies the police got a pair of Porsches to try to catch them. The Porsches just couldn’t keep up. The police found the only thing that could catch a Cossie, was a helicopter.
It’s going to have some work to do to compete with Subaru and Mitsubishi but I think they’ll do it.

    3. Mustang GT-R. Ok, it’s just a concept, but what a concept! Everyone loves the Mustang. Some of the 90s Mustangs were ****e but the new one due this summer looks like recapturing the magic. This is a one-off built to celebrate the 40th anniverserary of the Mustang. Just about everything on the car is, or will be available to Ford Racing customers so expect tuned down versions of the car to appear in different championships around the world.

    4. Mitsubishi EVO VIII FQ330. Yes it’s not a Ford so yes, I was exaggerating when I said all the cars I want to own are Fords. This is the exception that proves the rule. I’ve always loved the brutish looks of the EVO and this is the most extreme ever. For the uneducated the EVO stands for Evolution. The VIII means it’s the eight version. The 330 means it has 330bhp (that’ a lot – the average 2 litre has less than 100bhp) and the FQ stands for F***<H<H<Hine Quality.
I’d have this above a Skyline because of the price. The Skyline was always billed as a cheap, alternative super-car. It wasn’t from a prestige brand and it didn’t have a massive engine. It relied on superior technology to deliver it’s performance. The trouble was it was Stg£80,000. It’s in the same price band as the prestige marks but it’s not a prestige car. It’s not a true people’s car and it’s not a true super-car. It’s a very impressive machine but I just don’t want to own one. That said, the FQ330 is Stg£58,000. The basic EVO VIII starts around Stg£30,000

    5. Toyota Celica GT4. Not another exception because I don’t want to buy this car – I already own one. They don’t make them anymore so mine’s the latest model – the ST205 that went out of production in 1999. Looks fantastic. See the massive air intakes in the bonnet? They’re not a turbo scoop. The turbo intake is that notch to the left of the air-intake. All those air-intakes and vents further up the bonnet are all for cooling. When the engine’s idling, you can see a heat haze coming out of those.
241bhp gives me a 0-60 of about 6.6 seconds. That’s the official time but it seems much faster than that. I’m bringing it to DragWarz next month to get some proper times on it before I do any performance modifying. Between the four wheel drive and the spoilers it’s glued to the road. Between the looks and the performance I love this car. I wouldn’t really take the EVO above this, but by the time I can afford the FQ330, the GT4 is going to be getting a bit long in the tooth. I’ll never want to get rid of the GT4 but at some point it’ll get too expensive to run.

Beyond the top five things get a bit tricky. At number 6 I’d have an Aston Martin. Bit of a cheat there. Aston Martin are owned by Ford but they’re a different beast altogether. They’re the definition of Grand Tourer. Big, beautiful, luxorious cars. The trouble is; which one to choose? They’re all gorgeous. I’m picking the Vanquish Vantage Volante, but only because it’s got the coolest name.
No matter how much money I had, just about every car I’d ever consider owning comes from the Ford ‘stable’. Dream cars aside, if I had a family I’d want a Volvo (also owned by Ford) XC-90 but would probably only be able to afford a Focus. If I wanted a saloon (I can’t imagine why) I’d want a Mazda (again, owned by Ford) 6 but would probably only afford a Mazda 626. If I wanted an off-roader (I’d have to marry a farmer’s daughter or something) I’d want one of those limited edition Land Rover (owned by….you get the idea) Defenders with the 3.0 turbo-diesel engines but would probably get a basic Defender

Nice post! I always enjoy reading about someone's love of cars.
Just to pick you up on one slight thing - about your comparision to a "normal" 2 litre car, I don't think any would have less than 100BHP. For example. the 2 litre Mondeo has 142BHP according to Parker's.

I've always liked the Celica myself, and plan on getting a GT4 at some stage. (I'd also like to get a 4th generation 2.2 VTEC Honda Prelude but I'll have to build myself a garage first!)
The 6.6 figure does sound a little high alright. Parker's has the GT4's book figures listed as 239BHP and 0 to 60 of 6.1 seconds. How heavy is the GT4?

Let's say I won about €1m...and assume that rules out many of the "top end" of the car spectrum (e.g. Enzo, SLR, Carrera GT etc.)....my five berth garage would contain an RX-8 (or maybe even an RX-7 :) ) ; either an EVO VI, VIII or an STi of some sort, an M5 for doin the shopping (the new V10 please), a Honda NSX-R (need at least one VTEC motor!) and a Boxster S (for open top thrills). I think that gives a good range of "everyday" cars. I reckon that lot would cost between €300 and €400k and I'd lash out another 100 grand on the garage to house them comfortably. Oh and I almost forgot the Nissan Micra for Mrs. V, that can go outside in the elements though.

tbh - i didn't bother looking it up. The old man's 2 litre has 90something and the sister's 2 litre has 108 or something. I was guesstimating

Officially 1,370Kg. God knows if that's accurate.

Ando you can't have a ST170, or a ST220 or the new Fiesta one (ST180?). ST is already an accronym for something 'orrible.

If that's the book figure, it probably includes the weight of a full tank of fuel :) but it's still fairly heavy though so I guess that's what makes the difference there.

Is that your car that you linked to?

Na - that's not my car. I keep meaning to take some pictures but I'm so lazy. I even have a camera phone in my pocket every time I sit into it. Mine's black too though.

It does sound fairly heavy - apart from 4 wheel drive systems being heavy anyway, it's fairly comfy inside. If I stripped out some of the extras like the electric windows, air-con and spare wheel it'd probably make a fair difference, but I think I'll just up the power instead.

Aren't most of the AMGs called x55? So the SL500 AMG is an SL55 (afaik) and the S-Class AMG the S55. Don't know why it's 55 but I suppose because they're German it's a clever way of hiding the SS labels. :)
