after reading a thread here earlier I said "oops, need a defrag!"

ran it on my C partition but it came back incomplete.

    a san_test.tmp file, 512megs in size had 265 fragmentations and wouldn't defrag.

it's a hidden file on my C partition and last modified on the 30 May 2004.

anybody know if tis safe to delete or whats going on?

    it's not.

it's just hidden on C not in any of the main folders.

I have yet to come across ANY .tmp file that was not safe to delete.

Try deleting in windows as normal.

If you go Start-Run and type in command then a DOS window will appear. You might bebale to change the file attribute using the ATTRIB command. Type attrib <filename> - see what comes back and then try and change to a normal file type.

All that springs to mind for now !

Actually, I'd recommend to use CMD.exe rather than command.exe.

CMD is much more powerful, as it's not DOS but a much more powerful command interpretor.

.tmp files can be deleted (as long as the application using doesn't have a read-lock on the file. Make sure that the app that creates the file is closed, and all processes of that app are terminated.

if you are running Win2K/XP/Win2003, open my computer, select and right click the your C drive... choose Properties and find Clean Up...

that might also help to remove all other files...

not sure if this is related... but i always defrag my drives in Safe-Mode...

    cheers for the replies people.

I ended up just deleting the file and running defrag after.

can't say I've noticed much of an improvement :dunno:

thanks all the same tho :)
