    Happy Bloomsday everybody.

Also, only 24 days 3 hours left to CTYI! WOOO

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 110 ✭✭the_only_Ali

Yeah, happy Bloomsday! Anyone else bother to do anything even vaguely James Joycian? I wandered down to the tower in Sandycove, saw people in straw boaters, then decided I needed ice cream. So I left. Still, I tried... I probably should have read past page 66 of Ulysees though, it might have been more interesting that way.

24 days, 2 hours and 49 minutes (I think) left til CTYI!

Word of advice, countdown only make it seem further away. I plan on going on insane gaming binges after the JC, that should help me forget that time is passing between now and CTYI

Also, could someone explain this bloomsday phenomonom to me?

Seems some lad by the name of Joyce wrote a book. A terribly long and boring book, I'm told, which makes absolutely no sense. In this book he describes the antics of a lad by the name of Bloom, from whose name we get "Bloomsday". This lad goes on a bit of an Odyssey around Dublin, for no real reason. Now, for some strange reason, people are feeling the need to reenact scenes from the book. They are helpfully given financial backing in this by Dennys, who got the kind of plug money can't buy when Bloom bought some of their sausages (at least I think it was him, but he was Jewish. Not very kosher) in some historical butcher's shop. The relatives of Mr Joyce don't like this at all, though, having sought to block all references to the book, a move which required government intervention to allow the "festivities" to go ahead. All in all, it's a way for middle class types to pretend they're civilised and intelligent, despite having absolutely no knowledge of the book. There's also some stuff about how much Dublin has changed in 100 years, but that mainly takes a back seat to the shameless plugs of Denny

I think eating a breakfast consisting of kidneys tasting of urine (naturally) is also part of the experience  (man vomitting) Mind oyu, that's supposed to be a good hangover cure (don't quote me on that, I don't want a load of drunk/hungover people breaking into my house in the middle of the night to kill me coz they hgave a "sour taste in their mouths")

    You forgot the drinking

Apparently Joyce was a wanker. Apparently many human beings would be more than willing to boot him up the arse if he was still alive. Apparently he was one of those people who made everything he knew clear to all in his writings merely for the sake of 'showing-off'. At least when Thoreau made references to the classics they were relevant to what he was discussing at the time, rather than thrown in pointlessly.

However, having not read anything by Joyce yet, I shall check the validity of these judgements when I've finished Ulysses and Dubliners which I shall read once I have finished Dr. Sax. Which is a damn good book so far.

he gives us an excuse to dress up in hooped skirts and petticoats and bloomers and corsets. and then complain about wearing these things and pretending we're suffragettes.

so i wouldn't slag him if i were you

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 315 ✭✭gigglingrat

They cut a bush in peoples park to look like him. Thats all I know. Gotta pg...8 I think. Including the intro.

I'm so xciteed! And excited. That too. I was just studying science last nite and all these memories came back...remember Maried pretending to be batman in her dressing gown nd running after all those poor unsuspecting people in the hall?

    Sigh. *flicks tear of nostalgia/laughter*

ok just to try and sorta swing this back towards ctyi we cud laways have a bloomsday just to confuse the americans, but that wud require someone having read as far as page 60 or page 60 at least.

i got as far as page 15 got monunmetalyl confused and gave up (i hadnt paid for the book so it was no real lose)

but back to the bloomsday thing now that i think of it the cafeteria food may be an issue (when isnt it) given the denny sausages but im sure there are loads of people who may dress up to some extent eg just a straw hat

and above all to confuse americans (just to reiterate)

I agree with Raphael, all this counting is making me feel nauseous/ depressed. Especially when SOMEBODY'S MSN name is "Only 22 days to go people" {CoughPeterFing} Everybody, stop the counting, please!!! That way it can sneak up on us, and then BANG we'll be there in no-time @ all.

thanks to Binne, last year we had such 'special days.' e.g. valentines day, xmas, halloween.

it was suggested and it happened.

from my experience the only way to get the est of it is to make a list of all the things u wish u had done in the previous sessions. and tick them off one by one as u do them this time. i've no regrets.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 315 ✭✭gigglingrat

    Of course! A list!

Hmmm. Sounds like work to me.
Spontaneity is more fun then ''structure'', I think.

But its no fun to be spontaniously doing nothing cos you forgot everything cos you didn't make a list.

    True.

    I'm gonna stop now.

    You do that.

Keep it down, both of you.

You're just jelous cos the voices only talk to me....

Oh, A List --> 1/ Have a food eating compition. With cafiteria food, this could get fugly...
2/ Food fight. (for when compition gets fugly)
3/ Hide and seek is always amusing
    4/ Random acts of stupidity
    5/Music. Singing. Playing. Dancing. Whatever.
6/Go on mystical quest to that room with the foozball table again. Get lost in rez, if at all possible.
    7/ Ice-cream.
8/Walk around barefoot and talk in rhyme. (ties into point 4)
    9/ Reminisce
10/ I had a whole 25 good ones but they were in my head and now there gone, so someone whos brain isn't full can finish this.
11/ Oh, and have fun! Obviously.
