Port company to make €53m investment
    01 June 2004 19:49

The Shannon/Foynes Port Company is to invest over €53 million in port facilities along the Shannon Estuary over the next five years.

The plan will include the commercial development of 44 acres of Limerick's docklands and a major jetty extension and restructuring of Foynes Port.

It will also include the construction of a new deep water container transhipment terminal at Ballylongford in Co Kerry.

The board of Shannon/Foynes Port Company says Ballylongford is the ideal geographic location to allow it to capitalise on acute congestion at existing European container ports like Rotterdam and Antwerp.

The chairman of Shannon/Foynes Port Company, Kieran McSweeney, said the plan represented a historic opportunity to address the long standing infrastructural deficit in the west of Ireland.
