What's up with the register of electors?

The missus got a polling card yesterday, addressed to Mrs <her first name> <my surname>. As far as she's concerned, that's not her name, she never goes by it, and she certainly didn't register to vote under it. I honestly can't remember what her last polling card said, but I'm pretty sure she would have kicked up a fuss back then, if it was the same as this one.

The register used to have our address wrong - had the townland next door instead of ours. We went through the process to amend the register. Again, I'm certain she used her own name.

I notice that the current polling card has the correct address on it, but not spelled the way I spell it. This leads to my question: who decides what goes in the register? When I submit my details, how come they don't get entered exactly the way I provide them?

One final question - as far as I know, I still have two votes back in Westmeath (always had two - more of the same crap I mentioned above) - I assume the fact that I don't cast those votes will be reflected in the turnout figures?

There has to be a better way of keeping track of voters. Imagine the state the country's finances would be in if the Revenue Commissioners were as inept at identifying people!
