The Irish Farmers' Association has rejected calls from the Irish Road Haulage Association to abolish green diesel.

It is widely used in agricultural vehicles and carries lower taxes than ordinary diesel.

The IFA said its members would not stand for the haulage group's outrageous interference in its business.

Chairman of the IFA's Industrial Committee, Tom Dunne, said the Haulage Association's demands completely miss the target and would penalise law-abiding farmers.

He added that this latest call by hauliers is part of their continuing campaign to put farmers off the road, and prevent them from legitimately delivering their produce to market using their own machinery.

'If they are truly concerned about the misuse and treatment of marked diesel oil, they would be better served by looking to their own ranks and ensuring that hauliers do not provide a market outlet for the criminal diesel washing gangs', Mr Dunne said.
