    Hi all,

just got off the phone from a Fiat Dealer, they told me that the following needs replacing / fixing on my car:

    1. Head Gasket
    2. Waterpump
    3. Thermostat
    4. Timing Belt and tensioners.

The cost for this is €750 (not including VAT). This will hit my pocket hard, is this a reasonable price? I am assuming most of it is labor.

    Thanks

i couldnt tell you but am i right in saying that the Head Gasket going is a problem across the whole fiat range? I heard off loads of people how you expcet it to go on puntos after about 60k.

no need to replace the waterpump, unless this is source of the problem in first place.

but this is how they operate, replace everything.

small, garage will charge you 350-400 for the job

Timing belt is usually a big enough job in itself but I heard this place in Stoneybatter are quite reasonable for doing Alfas as they're an independent Alfa specialist, they're called TI Autos and the number is 01 8386567.

You could also call Alasta Autos near the Shelborne Greyhound track, they're another independent place that used to have the Alfa/Fiat franchise.

Independents are usually cheaper than main dealers and I've heard good stuff about TI Autos. Let me know how you get on, I'd be interested to know.

no need to replace the waterpump
I disagree. He might as well get the pump changed seeing as the pump is in the vicinity of the cambelt. Also there's no point draining and refilling the system with new coolant now (which will need to be done anyway for the HG replacement) only for the pump to go in 6 months time and have to do the draining/refilling again.

I don't know how much a water pump for a FIAT is. I would guess no more than 70-80 euros. Maybe cheaper.

well, pump is probably the strongest part in this Fiat:D not like the crap that they put to some bmw's and vw's where unit has plastic impellers were known for premature failure.

I do agree that some parts could be replaced while doing different job but in most cases blown gasket is caused by something else.
