Aer Rianta industrial action 'not imminent'

    June 08, 2004 19:53
SIPTU president Jack O'Connor has played down the threat of disruption at Aer Rianta airports, saying he does not believe industrial action is imminent.

Earlier SIPTU's aviation branch gave Mr O'Connor 48 hours to secure from the Taoiseach guarantees on the future of the company and its workers. They warned that if those assurances were not given, industrial action could not be ruled out.

The social partners met at Government Buildings today to start talks on another 18-month pay deal. It is expected that those pay talks will continue over the weekend and into next week.

Meanwhile, the Irish Bank Officials' Association has insisted that any new pay deal must include a 7% wage increase over 18 months, a local bargaining clause, and support for the setting up of a 'Forum on Banking' following recent events in the sector.

And the National Bus and Rail workers union has postponed any further talks with the Department of Transport because a promise to respond to its concerns over the future of Dublin Bus was not honoured.

The union's executive is to hold a special meeting on Saturday to consider its contributions to the talks on the future of CIE.over 18 months, a local bargaining clause, and support for the setting up of a 'Forum on Banking' following recent events in the sector.

General Secretary Larry Broderick said his union had to be free to negotiate locally with highly profitable organisations such as the banks.
