I was told this by an examiner, did he mean the afternoon paper as well?

Well you're only supposed to be 1/2 hour early for the first exam you sit - since most repeats don't take english, examiners generally extend the 1/2 hour thing for the second day. In reality, you don't actually have to be 1/2 hour early. In fact, you can be up to 1/2 hours late and still be admitted. Bit stupid, but possible.

You only need to early for your first exam on day one to sign the roll. That's all.

We signed the roll after the paper started.

Hey just a question, (hopefully not gonna happen unless somehtin goes SERIOUSLY wrong) but when you repeat do you choose what ya repeat or do ya gotta do like at least 4 subjects or can ya only do 1?

You can repeat as many or as little subjects as you want - as long as you had the points you needed from the previous year you can repeat oine question for matriculation.
