Tipperary Footballers

So thought I would just check out the general concensus in relation to the Tipperary footballers refusing to play against Fermanagh in the qualifiers this weekend. I think the story is that there was a club match played during the week, and the County Management had asked that it not be played. The board ignored them so then the management resigned. After this the players had a meeting and backed the management by saying they would not play this weekend so now Fermanagh have a walkover, from what looked like it could have been a very tough game. If I have got my facts right above, but they are open to correction, I think the board are definitley in the wrong here. Surely the club match could have waited a week!

i think the players and management alike were dead right. the co. board have an obligation to ensure preparations for all intercounty games were intact and they completly neglected that + if the hurlers showed a fraction of the spirit our footballers have shown the last two years we wouldnt be doing so bad.

i think sadly tipp football will cease to exist as kilkennys did and possibly who knows declan browne may solve Dublins free taking problem.

Kerry hurlers have done the same against down in the qualifiers too.

First a question: Was this a football or hurling game that was played during the week?

Now as I see it there are 2 issues here. First is the issue getting championships played even if the county team is still involved in the all-ireland series and second is facilitating the county team by minimising the chances of players getting injured while playing in other matches. For me here there should not have been a match arranged 3 or 4 days before a championship match.

If this was a hurling match (this is why i asked the question) then it seems like the tipp co board need to get the football and hurling sections talking to each other.

From what I read, it was a Hurling match.
Two players from the senior football panel were involved in the match.
This game was part of the Mid-Tipp divisional championship.
The Tipp county board didn't want to medle with the affairs of the Mid-Tipp board.
Both clubs wanted to play the game.
One of the clubs had players on all the county hurling & football teams (except MF) so that if this game wasn't played then, then it might not have been played for a long time.

I think that the Tipp County board were wrong for not postponing the game even though it would have been against the wishes of the clubs.

Sean Kelly has come out this morning and said that both counties will have to be punished for this. Tipp I hope you are wrong about the Tipp footballers even though it would possibly be to Dublins advantage, Tipp have quite a good side and have progressed very well since the qualifier system was introduced. It would be a shame to see all that good work undone!

Niall Curran had nothing to do with the problem as hes injured (Broken finger) But either way Mullinahone would of hammered Cashel anyway. Who cares the footballers are out of it.

I doubt they would take Brown if they would not take the Gallaghers, hopefully he will come to play for Wexford if he gets fed up:D

Remember though he already turned down Kildare when Micko was there.

One way to stop teams in one code opting out of the championship mid way through would be to kick both senior county teams out of the championship. Do you think that the Kerry or Tipperary county boards would fail to act if their football or hurling teams(respectivaly) were to be kicked out of their respective championships? I think not!

Its the attitude of TippTip and others like him in the county, with their absolute bias against the footballers - the footballers that do their very best in the blue and gold to represent their county - that led to the footballers making their stand.

Fair play to the footballers for having the courage of their convictions.

The county certainly doesnt deserve a player with the talent of Deccie Browne. He knows it, yet nonetheless he's that proud to wear the Tipp jersey that he's turned down offers from both Kildare and Laois to play for them. Offers that undoubtedly would have led to the lining of his pockets, as well as the opportunity to play in bigger games more often.

i think that this was the latest of a number of incidents. That it has happened before. But the hurlers are gonna be in the same situation next week or the week after.

Oh and on browne, he wouldn't go past laois if he wanted to play for some-one else ;)

Tipp football is dying despite all the effort the county team put in, up here in the north of the county only for a couple of clubs football isn't played. Kiladangan, Inane Rovers and Newport are the only 3 clubs who play intermediate, we have no senior teams. The last team from the north to play in the county c'ship was my own club Nenagh Eire Og,we won the county intermediate in 97 and in '98 we went senior and won the north final by 20 points approx, we played Ardfinnan in 1/4 final and got hammered by much the same score.
Last year Eire Og didn't even field a junior team, its the same in alot of clubs here, hurling rules and comes first so unless Tipperary go out and win an all Ireland in football which I don't think will happen in the near future it could die out. Its already lost interest in north tipp I know things aren't quite so bad in the south and mid but how long before it is?

Cuculann , u shouldnt worry too much as Football at younger lvls in north Tipp is quite strong . At U16 lvl allmost all hurling clubs have a football club too .
Im a Nenagh man myself , but play for Shannon Rovers (now Shannon Gaels ) , an even came up against my native side as we got beat by a bout 12 points :( .

Infact I cant even think of one hurling side that dosent have a football side at the moment . Which means we might have a few dark days in the future but there will be lots of talent a couple of years later .
