What essays/letters do people think are gonna come up? I've heard so far that the EU and the smoking ban are likely. Any others?

I'm guessing smoking for Ausserung, EU for letter. Which means Fremdsprachen, Kulturen, all that stuff.

But prediction hasn't got anyone anywhere so far. :dunno:

Unfortunately, the "schriftliche Produktion" section of the German paper is not as easy to predict as it once was. Since 1998, the letter has consisted of about four different themes. They do tend to be topical and sometimes relate to the themes of the picture stories/role-plays in the orals. Possibilities include: racism, smoking ban, bullying (or discrimination in general), refugees, EU enlargement, world of work for young people, environment. There is always one topic in the letter which you really couldn't predict as well.

By the way, the vast majority of candidates (approx 90%) opt for the letter not the essay. However the Department persist in making the essay option the more difficult one every year. Does not make a lot of sense but then again the Department often doesn't!

for grammer you should know it already... if not you're fairly screwed.

Be able to recognise verbs in infinitive (look for a model verb insame sentance) adjectives, subjunctive, plu perfect, perfect, imperfect etc

Of course while they could test any part of grammar, the Department like asking certain things:

adjective endings;

forming questions (especially when the sentence consists of a verb plus a preposition);

stating the number, gender and case of an underlined noun in a sentence.

Make sure you know the grammar terms in German. Do previous papers if you haven't already, as the same topics alternate every year. Adjectives are due again this year.

I have excellent and original notes (imho ) on all grammar topics too. Please state what you are looking for, as there is too much to send in total. Yes, I teach German.
