    Not really surprising.

    Good taken header though.

Kudos to King! He's looked solid beyond his years. France are pretty poor though, they seem to be trying to cruise through rather than battle. I'm of to watch Dumps and Bradys half-time rants! :)

England are scum, that booing was fcking disgraceful, wasnt a freekick either :/

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,766 ✭✭✭robbie1876

Not a very interesting half, but a great header from Lampard. Where is Henry?? France look very average, it could be another world cup nightmare group for them.

England to win it 2-0, with a last minute goal from Rooney.

As opposed to in Ireland where 'God save the queen' isn't even played at Lansdowne Road b4 a soccer match? Yes, we're really ones to talk.

Have to say England don't deserve their lead. Their midfield look decidely second best to me - no matter what the ITV commentary team are seeing thru those rose tinted monitors of theirs. Frances front pairing don't seem to be up to much at the mo tho.

Had to switch over to network 2, couldn't listen to Robson blather on anymore. Switched back just at the end of the half to hear him triumphalising over the performances of Gerrard, Lampard and "first class" Rooney. Ugh.

France will have to change things around, they have no width (nor do England, whenver they have the ball they seem to switch to the diamond). Henry and Owen have barely gotten a touch.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,003 ✭✭✭✭The Muppet

Where is the french midfield . Beckham has so much time and space is is going to punish them again with a killer ball from play if they don't tighten up on him. England are winning the midfield and if The French dont do something about it second half they are going to lose this match. Rooney is playing well Owen was very quiet first half. King has settled in well after a litttle hiccup in the first few minutes.

More of the same in the second half I hope and If France continue to play as they are I can see England scoring again but Terry Henry is always likely to produce a piece of magic so its far from over yet..

    What a ****ing ending!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,003 ✭✭✭✭The Muppet

What a finish to the game, France put the pressure on in the second half and got their Result . The first goal was coming for most of the second half . I think Sven made some bad substitutions and England will be devestated at that loss.

    Harsh but fair.

Just a pity it was Gerrard who was at fault :/

Don't know what Eriksson was thinking taking off Rooney for that useless lumbering oaf Heskey. The only thing he did was give away the free-kick that let France back in. Thank God he won't be at Anfield next season.

Despite what some have said I thought it was a great game.

France looked out of sorts throughout, but I thought England played well for most of the match, playing to their strengths and frustrating France.

England's back four looked solid, and King looked a natural alongside Sol. Thats Carragher forked then, no chance he'll get a game now.

Apart from Beckham (yes, he did have a decent game) the English midfield was average. Didn't use the ball as well as they could, and most of the work done in the middle of the park was done by Rooney.

Owen was terrible. Didn't come into the game at all, he was England's worst player, certainly until Calamity lost the head. I thought Rooney played very well, he worked hard throughout and looked to be England's most dangerous player. I did think he deserved a booking though, he must have given away 10 fouls.

On the French side of things, Lizarazu was absymal. He lacked at least a yard of pace and his concentration was woeful. Makalalee (sp?) and Viera were lazy as hell, expected much more out of both of them. The entire French midfield expected Zidane to do it all for them, and he appeared well pis*ed off because of it.

Thought the French looked ok at the back (Lizarazu apart), and what a save from Barthez! Up front Henry and Trez were non-entities.

To be honest, I think England woz robbed!

If he didn't take the free kick and the peno, Henry would have. Not a bad man to have as your number two.

Good game hopefully more of them ,England didnt deserve to be in front with their only shot , they had 3 in total one was a peno and other hit barthez in the face :D

France kept trying and got their rewards England even before they scored never looked liked they wanted to win the game.

Good finsih but we al knew a goal was coming just didnt know when.

That result was no more than England deserved.

Sven and co don't seem to have learnt a single thing in the two years since WC2002 and their attitude of stick 10 men behind the ball once you hit 1-0 is puzzling for any team that actually fancies themselves as potential champions.

Teams simply cannot maintain that type of 100% defensive game for 30-40 minutes against quality opposition and England should realise that just because they got away with it once (v Argentina 2002) that it not going to work the majority of the time.

If England tried playing for 90 minutes they way they did whilst it was still 0-0 then they'd definetly have a chance of progress in this tournment but unfortunately their second half performance showed what this team is (or more accurately 'is not') all about.

Quite an amazing finish to the game. They must be absolutely gutted.

He's good at club level, but not so well at international level, don't know why.

    Rubbish!!!!!!!!

What do you expect them to do against the best team in the world? If Ireland snatch a goal against France what do you think they are going to do, all out attack?

They played the perfect game for 90 minutes and defended very well but two mistakes cost them in the end.

It was up to France to break them down and they failed until their two dead ball opportunities where Zidane showed his worth to the side.

Henry wouldn't have scored the free kick or peno, he always shrinks in the big games and this game was no exception.

Zidane had a bad game, but the reason why he is the best player in the world is because he kept slogging away at it, and eventually it paid off!

Slightly harsh Pigman. Until Heskey's blunder (sorry, that should read tackle...) France never looked like scoring. And if England had a half-decent keeper (Nigel Martyn anyone? Robinson?) Zidane may not have converted the free.

Without the free, its unlikely France would have pushed forward for the break that lead to the peno.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,386 ✭✭✭smuckers

The penno miss was the turning point but there was no need for Heskey to make that stupid foul and a terrible backpass by Gerrard but James should have stood up better to Henry.
The confidence will be low, Rooney who outshined Owen big time and King were the best players.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,458 ✭✭✭✭gandalf

Well England didn't deserve to lose that. They didn't deserve to win it either. 2 stupid mistakes cost them their dream start to Euro2004 a, and I can now see them going out. I agree Rooney was good but Sven was right to take him off before he got sent off.

Henry looked like he was in one of his moods, but then again the delivery to the front two by France was dismal. Hopefully the England fans don't go crazy tonight over this!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,933 ✭✭✭thejollyrodger

I think the french deserved to win. Zindane is a world class player and showed on a number of occasions that he can totally changed a match. England were under pressure for ages and stopped going forward. France were bound to score once.

If that was Ireland out there and we were 1-0 ahead in same game, we would have kept playing football until the final minute. Keep the 4 at the back but keep pressing forward.

It does show something about the lack of character or something in the english side to have a lead and then loose it to silly mistakes. I think England will go on to the quarter finals but their midfield and forwards are really having to play a lot better.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 88,972 ✭✭✭✭mike65

Nicky Butt as a defensive midfielder anyone?

Certainly having Gerrard in that role killed him off as a threat (except to England of course!), Owen was cut adrift which was the side effect of Gerrards role I cant remember a single attacking pass from Stevie.

ON a side note - Clive Tit-edsley on ITV! Christ after 15 mins I switch to N2 to keep my telly from destruction.
