I figured this might be the best place to post this.

I'm really interested in learning the saxophone and i was wondering if anyone knew a good teacher or place i could get lessons. Actually any information about the sax (like a good place to buy one etc) would also be helpful. I'm not really interested in doing exams etc. I'd prefer just to be able to play well.

    Any help appreciated...

    Thanks.

Paul Ryan's web site also has info about some sax teachers and their locations.
DIT might not be best place to go as it's more focused on the grades and degrees. Unless things have changed since I was a student there.

Rough prices: new instruments, Alto 700, Tenor 1000. August can be a good time to buy as some students change instruments over the summer and try to sell them before new academic year. Also keep an eye on Buy & Sell.ie/. some instruments there now.

You'll need somewhere decent to practice. One house I lived in was in a terrace with a kid in adjacent bedroom. Not good and could only practice up to 7pm which was nigh on impossible after a day's work.

Also if you want to make reasonable progress, you would need to put in about 2-3 hours a week playing. Embouchure (mouth muscles/shape) takes time to develop. My own is getting back into shape after 9 months of not playing, so a 2 hour gig/rehearsal is tough at the mo'.

IME adult students can have too many distractions to make the commitment. I always made sure to charge full term in advance as this gave incentive to student to come. And I would talk to an adult student if I felt they weren't making the commitment. Not much point in wasting their time or mine, nothing to do with the money. It can be very hard listening to someone trying to honk out a tune.

Also for teachers, take a look in music shops in city centre: you sometimes see notices up on their boards.
