Which is better Munster or Leinster hurling?

Which is better Munster or Leinster hurling? I mean this in general terms (eg better teams, better skill level etc).

I personally perfer Leinster hurling. I think that the skill level is higher than in Munster. The main criticism of Leinster hurling recently has been that the Championship is all about Kilkenny well that arguement has been erased by last Sunday.

I will admit that the Munster championship is probably more passionate. But I feel that there is to much emphasise on the occasion and the passion rather than on the actual hurling.

Also if you look at the championship winners over the last ten years(1994-2003) it reads in Leinsters favour

    Leinster (6 times winners):
    Kilkenny (2003,2002,200)
    Offaly (1998,1994)
    Wexford (1996)

    Munster (4 times winners):
    Clare (1997,1995)
    Cork (1999)
    Tipperary (2001)

I think that there are more counties at a slightly highter level in Munster, whereas in Leinster Kilkenny are streets ahead of Wexford and Offaly. Waterford, Cork, Tipp, Clare and Limerick- any of these teams could beat the other on any given day, the competition is much closer. I know that Wexford just beat Kilkenny but that was a once off for me. As a result I would have to say I think the Munster hurling is better.

I would not agree, last year Offaly beat Limerick, Wexford beat Waterford and should have beaten Cork the first day, and Kilkenny beat Tipperary and Cork

Well like I said Kilkenny are out on their own. I accept what you say about the other results, but I also remember Offaly just about beat Dublin last year. Only pulled clear with about five minutes to go. That is not indicative of a top hurling team to me and I think the Munster teams mentioned would probably have made easier work of the dubs. Wexford seem to be a bit hot and cold, a bit like Waterford I suppose.

They would, only they wouldn't play senior hurling for fear of beating the pants off everyone else. :D

yeah but Kilkenny have won the last six leinster in a row before this yr whereas Clare Cork Tipp Waterford have shared the last 6 munster between them,

Competition is everything and is more apparent in Munster

Munster have more good teams than Leinster, but I'd say the 2 are about even as far as standard goes.

There always seems to be 2 teams from Leinster and 2 from Munster in the semi finals (unless galway manage to sneak in).

    Connacht Hurling.

Galway are good enough to win the Leinster title... Roscommon are as good as Westmeath or Down.

Mayo and Sligo are improving. It'd be great if they could get the Connacht Championship up and running again - though Galway would probably not enter cause they are a shower of ****

TMT try to stay somewhat within the bounds of reality please. Galway are a good side but would not be on a par with Kilkenny. As for Mayo and Sligo, they may be improving, but they are a long distance from ready to compete in either Munster or Leinster championships or their equivalents.

Munster hurling all the way, all you have to do is look at the record books and see the passion of munster hurling final day!

Munster Hurling and of thread, the skill the tradition, the meaninfulness of all the games only One province

    It has to be Munster

I would not get too carried away lads, after all Kilkenny is in Leinster! I agree the average standard is slightly higher in Munster but Kilkenny are the best by a long way!

Munster hurling showed today why it is number one. well done to waterford

I agree with cruiserweight's original comment that there seems to be too much emphasis on passion in Munster. It doesn't usually live up to the hype though as last year showed with the leinster counties dominating the qualifiers to a certain extent. I think there's a problem in Leinster though. More of the earlier games should be played in provincial venues in fromt of full houses; let the legends build up and the venues attain the notoriety of the likes of Semple and Pairc Ui Caoimh. I always found Croke Park too cavernous for the smaller games even with double headers.

soccer may be a very different sport but Porto are the Champions of the Champions League , but the Portuguese league isnt the strongest .

    So what is your point?

Kilkenny isn't a province! Munster might be one Kilkenny short of having the best team but they definitely have the strongest base of hurling in the country.

i think kilkenny showed a fine display yesterday, i havent seen that hunger in years. As they say we didnt come in the back door, we broke it down, frames and all. And even if we dont get any further at least we got further than tipp ner ner ner:p

Christ when is that Kilkenny team going to retire or something. I think Cork should be up there with Kilkenny but JBM stepping down after winning the all Ireland and the players strike, which forced the retirement of the legend Landers took Cork hurling back at least 5 years in experience.

    Munster Hurling all the way.

  • Registered Users Posts: 339 ✭✭country_gurl

theres a long waiting list for kilkenny to retire... treble here we come!!!!!!!!! They'v got their hunger back and new players such as tommy walsh(the new god) i should think we will be around for a long while yet.
Oh and not forgetting eddie brennan... the goal king

Munster Hurling, no Question at all. The main difference more then anything else being that Tipp, Clare etc especially Tipp could put out 3 or 4 Senior hurling teams and they'd all the cream of the crop.

Sure Leinster hurling is coming along but its simply Kilkenny. Wexford are coming along but still not up to it, not quite yet at least.

Look at players like Brendan Cummins, Unbeliveable, unnaturally good.

P.S - Galway suck, the only reason they're even counted as a hurling team is that they are the best in Connacht and thats not something to boast about.

4 - 20 to 1 -10, That just shows that they are nowhere near good enough.

Their success at all-ireland club level seems to indicate that what you've said is rubbish. That is all.

Were Galway not in the league final this year? Calling them muck is pure sh*te talk. How can they be expected to perform on a par witht he likes of Kilkenny when they have not played a competitive match since February or March, while Kilkenny have had a couple of championship standard games under their belt. As regards Leinster hurling, there is nothing between Wexford and Offaly really, but Kilkenny are a bit ahead.

Galway would have probably beaten anybody else in that round of the draw. They won the league and have good club teams. If Tipp are able to put out so many good teams why did they not bother against Cork and why do they not win the all-ireland every year.

Wexford coming along???? They have been in all-ireland finals three of the last four years. They are leinster champions, the only team to beat Kilkenny in the championship in the last three years and the last team to beat the current Munster champions in the championship.
