Tournaments : About the game or the hobby?

Just curious about peoples thoughts on this ...

Should a tournament give the majority of its points to the games played on the day, or should the likes of painting, sportsmanship and so on carry more marks?

Does a heavier game weighing of points encourage 'overly competative' (ie beardy / cheesy / semi-cheating gitishness) behaviour?

How would you see points ideally broken down?

    Thoughts?

Both, really. Cause some people just LOVE painting but suck at gaming, so give them a chance.

I think the majority should go for the games, I mean it's a tournament. The other factors are brilliant sideliners and should definitely be acknowledged but the games are the tournament

I dunno about the rest of you, but I would be far happier with that award than any of the battle awards they give.

There used to be a fellow at our club with a "Tournament" Tyranid army. Remember the days back before the "Shoot the big ones!" rule, where you at least had to have line of sight to a model to shoot at it? He converted his Warriors so that they practically crawled on their bellies and hid them behind a wall of Termagants so nobody could pick them out.

It was fairly well painted, but that sort of exploiting the rules is just sad...

I dunno now, thats a pretty cool idea. Its in character with the tyranids aswell, with the whole insect thing. They were doing that in a extract i read somewhere.....cant remember where.

If someone converted their models to that extent, would it not just be fair to still count the model as normal size, ie 'its about this size, ish, so yea he can see him', instead of looking at the actual model, it gives army commanders on raised platforms a massive disadvantage too.

If someone is converting to make the army look better, thats one thing. If they're being converted simply to try and wriggle around rules, thats another story.

Rules are made to be wiggled around, in my opinion. Fact is, it makes the game more realistic, and also ties in with the new line of sight rules.

He could have made a rule where they move as if in difficult terrain if they crawl. I would agree to that, at least.

How about sending in a single guardsman with a nuke, sacrificing himself and the nid army for everyone else? A fine Imperial victory, and plausible, too...

It is plausable, and a cool idea for inquisitor.

Why bother sending a guardsman at all? just send it in from a missile silo or from orbital launchers :) Thats one thing I never understood about warhammer, all these civilisations fighting for their survival, holding on with their last breath, and they see na army of a few million bugs......... why not just nuke the bugger? would save so much hassle, particularly with nid invasions like Kraken etc, one nuke would be rather effective against armies like that.

TBH that's what I was gonna say about the guardsman. However, if you look at a 2000 point army that's hardly a large battle if you consider battles from the real world. Also some of the objectives are things like so and so is looking for this blah blah, we want it, kill them, get thing.

Wouldn't make for much of a fun game though, would it?

Besides, it was do-able in RT.

You could purchase off table support fire. I heard about someone who took a 5 man IG command group, and everything else as a support bombardment .. with Vortex missiles.

    Short game.

theres no point fighting over a radiation ruined planet. what use is it? thats why there will always be poor bloody infantry, no point taking something thats worthless to hold.
