Modems USB vs Wired?

I have modem which I currently run wired into a switch and onwards to the phone socket. I use the switch for Xbox Live also. Would it be better to run the modem USB and use another modem I have to connect the Xbox. I have two sockets but would not be able to run them simultaneously. My basic question is which is quicker…

My basic question is which is quicker USB or Wired through a switch (possible overhead). Or is the fact that my 512 line running at 480 is just too slow for it to make damn all diffrence.
