flash freezing

Copying a bitmap fill causes Flash to freeze. This occurs both in Flash MX and MX 2004. I am using a 2.2Ghz processor/ 256MB RAM so it should not be because of the hardware. Also Flash MX 2004 crashes sometimes when i rename an instance of a symbol. Does anyone know why it's happening or know of a patch etc?
