Just finished Spent by Joe Matt - totally class cringe humour about a scabby git that lives in a bedsit editing his porn collection, jerking off, pissing in bottles and treating his friends like crap.

I'm gonna have to get more of his stuff.

Kabuki: Dreams by David Mack - it looks amazing, but for me nowhere near as good as the previous story, Circle of Blood. Didn't have the same depth at all.

i've after gotten a couple of the new Booster Gold TPB's. 52 pick up is pure class, Reality Lost is a bit **** to be honest. it suffers from too much going on and for some reason skips two issues.

i still think the mag has potential. i'm going to get Blue & Gold soon, see what that's like.

Reading some of the TPB's of The Boys this week, it's great stuff so far. Refreshing after having read too much superhero nonsense lately!

Gonna try The Eternals and see if I like it next, I heard the endings not great but it was knocked down in the comic place so worth a go at least.

More "wot I read"-type stuff below:

    Strange Tales 2 & 3

After the conclusion of Wednesday Comics I was quite happy to pick this up, and like Fin Fang Four & Dark Reign: Modok Delay these have been fun as light-hearted and off-the-wall takes on Marvel characters. Unfortunately, a lof of the strongest material is in the first issue which means that by the third issue there are a couple of strips that are all but incomprehensible visually or just plain dull.

    Final Crisis Aftermath: Escape 5 & 6

I suppose I should've expected this. Given that I was enjoying this series because of the Prisoner-esque setup wherein nothing made sense (even the stuff the reader is expected to know about the DCU's characters and history), it was to be expected that when it all pulled together into a cohesive whole and came up with an ending and explanation, I'd be disappointed.

It wasn't bad, it's just....I would've enjoyed it a lot more if the creative team had been allowed to have it not make sense. The weirdness, tension & palpable sense of almost-madness in the first issue were great, but by the end they're nowhere to be seen.

    Mail Volume 2

As before, more done-in-one horror goodness.

    Dragon Ball vol 9 & 10

The fight scenes are starting to get a bit lengthier/more padded now, but it's still good fun. I'm waiting impatiently to get my hands on vol. 11 and find out
how Krilin's attempt at the Kamehameha turns out
    .

    20th Century Boys vol 5

I haven't finished this yet, but thus far it continues the established pattern of being great. Yuji is bringing together his team to fight against Friend's plan, but they still don't really know what they're up against. (I do, because I've seen the film version, but it's still great fun to read).

    Atomika 11

As Atomika realises how thoroughly he has failed the people he once claimed to protect, he prepares to fight Arohnir's combined forces to finally free Rus from its enslaver. Lots of pretty splash pages, but basically a big build up to #12 and the fight that was basically guaranteed to happen ever since the outcome of the Atomika/Baba Yaga fight came up.

    Injury #3/ The Aviatrix #1/ I feel good #1

I picked up Injury #1 & 2 a while ago, and enjoyed them as a weird mix of Derf/Chester Brown style "high school stories" and Kirby-styled sci-fi. Basically like something inspired by Love & Rockets, which is in fairness a pretty good starting point. I don't really know what to make of it, but it's been interesting so far. #3 was sold as part of a bundle, but I don't really mind since Aviatrix #1 is a very weird but imaginative story featuring a socially-incompetent diarrhoetic male lead, and a female pilot (who apparently doesn't exist) pledged to protect America's skies from monsters. Meanwhile I Feel Good #1 is a load of silly and/or disgusting humour from the female perspective, which is a welcome change (Example from a list comic - "Things I thought I wouldn't like and then I tried and it turned out I was right: 1. A Finger Up My Butt." with the glorious accompanying illustration of the "shocker" gesture, annotated with the 2 fingers as "yay" and the pinkie as "nay!").

I laughed and enjoyed them, and will no doubt do so several times more in future.

    Criminal: Sinners #1

Criminal isn't depressing, exactly, but good noir isn't happy or optimistic. Fortunately, Criminal continues to be awesome so I don't have to worry about whether it's a happy read.

Blackest Night atm. good stuff so far and only looks like its going to get better. Liking the return of Barry Alan.

read final crisis recently too... not the best tbh. preferred the original Crisis of Infinate Earths (of which i have a poorly edited, but fun novel)

It's seriously worth it, the whole thing works so much better when you read it all in one go. Fantastic stuff.

Have you read any of Brubaker & Phillips' Criminal?

It's not the same, exactly, but it's a great crime/noir series. See here for more info - basically if you're looking for a new noir/crime book to fill the void left by 100 Bullets you could do a lot worse than Criminal - the series so far has been collected in four softcover collections, and the latest story has just started. It's a pretty good read as single issues too, because each issue comes with a load of backmatter including essays, interviews and artwork.

i'd suggest picking up a few varied books from Marvel, DC and maybe one or two others to get a feel for what you think you'll like.
while i have my reservations about the main players of Civil War being out of character, the story and *especially* the art is amazing.

on a similar note, I just finished the Sinestro Corps vol 1.

    Instant.

    Favorite.

Title: Doctor Voodoo: Avenger of the Supernatural # 1
    Publisher: Marvel
    Writer: Rick Remember
    Artist: Jefte Palo
    Price: $ 3.99 US
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
    Website: www.marvel.com
Comments: Jerico Drumm is Doctor Voodoo the Sorcerer Supreme. His first test is against Dormammu he makes short work of him. Doctor Voodoo is now one arragant SOB. He is full of attitude. This though changes somewhat after the battle.
The art is vague. It is ho hum. The facial espressions are boring. Stephen Strange looks to be about seventy years old.
Doctor Voodoo is out to prove himself. But does he push to hard. He also dabbles in magic, dark magic that Stephen Strange would not have. Stephen though does seem to have some faith in Jerico. Jerico is a man with his heart in the right place. Also in this new series the magical seems much more mysterious than before as Jerico does things never tried before.
A new twist as well here is that there are really two new Sorcerers Supreme as Jerico is still possessed by his brother Daniel's spirit.
If Dormammu was not enough to test Doctor Voodoo than how about Doctor Doom. Doctor vs Doctor.
Jerico is not like Doctor Strange was. Doctor Voodoo takes the fight to his enemies, he does not wait.
The character Jerico Drumm a Master Hougan now Master of the Mystic Arts is a great personality. He is pushing himself to his limits though.
Brother Voodoo has for a long time been a character in Marvel Comics that has been made fun of. It was thought that he would never ever be seen in a regular comic book story again. So now to have his own regular series this just goes to show you anything is possible.
Two better opponents could not have been picked. Magic, and science with magic. Dormammu and Doctor Doom these two do definitely show Doctor Voodoo is now playing in the major leagues. A hero is measured by his villians.
Doctor Voodoo is a comic well worth checking out. You will be missing a very special superhero if you miss it. So don't miss it!

that's a tough one. i'd probably go for D.C. it feels more like a living, breathing universe (plus, Booster gold!) of the marvel books I have, when one character pops up in another one's book, it just feels like a glorified cameo. *runs and hides*:(
having said that, there's a reason Marvel are number one in the industry at the moment:D

Having said that, there's a reason Marvel are number one in the industry at the moment:D

I've read comments elsewhere suggesting that Marvel's sales dominance is more down to the number of titles they ship than to having a significantly wider audience, so I wouldn't read too much into it.

Regarding the whole "Marvel vs. DC" thing - it kind of depends on what you want to read. Marvel are pushing to make all their titles line up and work as a cohesive whole, but I've found that to push me away from the the couple of things I was reading, because I ended up feeling like I was expected to read a half a dozen other comics just to know the context for the comics I actually wanted to read.

DC, on the other hand, have long had a history of publishing comics which expect you to invest a huge amount of time and possibly money on either back issues or reading Wikipedia pages in order to understand their comics.

As for recommendations: You could try "Wolverine: Old Man Logan" - it's by the same team that did Civil War. I haven't read it because I'm not too keen on Mark Millar's writing, but if you liked the art on Civil War you'll likely enjoy at least the art in OML.

Is that a criticism? Don't watch the anime. ;)

Let's see since my last post in here I've finished/read:
    Iron Fist Omnibus
    Brubaker's Daredevil Omnibus
Dark Reign: Fantastic Four - I hate Reed Richards
    Avengers Initiative 3: Secret Invasion
New Avengers 9: Secret Invasion... part 2
    Dark Reign: Deadpool/Thunderbolts
    Deadpool: Secret Invasion
    Deadpool Classic 2
Further Adventures of Indiana Jones Omnibus 2
Indiana Jones and the Tomb of the Gods
    (reread)
    Blade of the Immortal 2
    Naruto 46
    (reread 1 - 40)
    100 Bullets 13
    Doctor Who: Agent Provocateur
    Doctor Who: The Forgotten

    Abyss
And Green Lantern: Sinestro Corps War 1/2 - Starting to get burned out on Green Lantern but it seems to be heading back into the emotional spectrum stuff again from the Blackest Night FCBD issue which was the reason I gave Rebirth a try in the first place.

Ah Dragonball (Z) where a simple standoff could last an entire episode:D still, edge of the seat stuff when you were 14.

just finished vol 2 yesterday. if i have any criticism (ant it's a small one) i'd like more focus to be on the Hal/Sinestro fight. but then again, i understand that a lot of attention has to go over to
    the anti-monitor

i read the first volume of 52 early in the week...loving the Question:)

    Oof, the build up to
    the actual Cell Games fights
    were heavy going. Hated
    Hercule/Mr. Satan
the first time round because of the delay, but grew on me later.

Forgot to add I re-read Indiana Jones and the Sargasso Pirates aswell. ;)

On the subject of ongoing comics, Green Lantern and Blackest Night were both great reads this week. Giving this whole "gauntlet" idea a chance in Amazing Spider-Man. Batman Unseen is wrapping up next week and it's been a great little series with some spectacular, very 80s art. Uncanny X-Men might be going somewhere decent too.

With Stark Disassembled starting and Captain America Reborn finishing this month (as well as Thor's series kicking off again) I'm hoping for something climactic with Siege. Bendis is writing it so it could be good. In DC,
they're heavily hinting at Bruce Wayne coming back somewhere between Blackest Night #6 and Batman and Robin #7 over the next two months
which is getting my inner fanboy excited.

    Since my last confession:

    Spider-Man/Human Torch ("I'm with Stupid") - Reread
    GLA Misassembled - Reread
    Dragon Ball Z 21 through 24
Cowa! - Can never get enough Toriyama art. Maybe if I ever see his contribution to Bitch's Life ;) )
    One Piece 22
(Dark Horse) Conan 3 through 7
Knights of the Old Republic 7
    Aliens Omnibus 4

I'm slowly getting through Borderline aswell. Tending to read a chapter then move onto something else.

    (Dark Horse) Conan vol 0

Batman: Faces - Wagner's Batman design reminded me of Mazzucchelli's. Nothing else does though. Was
the bearded lady at the end supposed to be Paul(ette) the vertical hermaphrodite?
    I couldn't tell.

    Batman: Haunted Knight

    Batman: Dark Victory
    - One day I'll listen to the guy who tells me what to avoid. Or I'll continue until I find one I really like he doesn't. ;) [Insert comparisons to Long Halloween here.] Must be have been annoying for the people reading this as monthly issues. Wasn't convinced Dent and Batman were friends in LH. Still not in DV. No matter how many times it's said.
