although they would run on my 386, I tentatively suggest Uplink and Galatic civilisations.

I think a little qualification on that statement is necessary. As directx is backward compatible - it will run on all directx capable graphics cards - eg a geforce 2. However, a GF4 ti4600 will not be able to take advantage of many of the new features of directx 9.
